"Lance Corporal W. Patterson, of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, has died from a wound he received in the fighting for Hill 60 on April 20. He enlisted in that regiment about five years ago. He was 23 years of age, and resided at Newtongrange."

"Information has reached his relatives in Newtongrange that Private James Clark, of the 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, has died in Germany. After the battle of Mons he was taken prisoner. He was 32 years of age and had previously served as a soldier for seven years, five years being spent in India and two in South Africa."

Alexander was born in 1897 in Beath, Fife (as was his mother) but by 1911 the family were in Dalkeith and in 1915 were at 38 The Square, Newtongrange as tenants of the Lothian Coal Company.
Alexander was appointed as a temporary boy clerk in October 1913 and joined the staff of the Home Office as an Assistant Clerk in December 1914. He enlisted in April 1915, serving in Egypt, Salonika and Palestine, and was wounded at Beersheba. He was killed by a shell while awaiting evacuation from the battle-field.

FRANK YOUNG, BW.

Named on the Heriot Parish War Memorial in Midlothian (or Borders) as:

Pte. FRANCIS B. YOUNG 2nd Btn, BLACK WATCH.
Frank Brown Young – age 32 – Private (8051) 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Frank was employed as a rope-splicer at the Lady Victoria Pit in Newtongrange, Midlothian and lived with his brother John at Dykeneuk when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1882 in Heriot. Son of the late John Young (died 1915) and Agnes (Murray) Young of Stow, Midlothian.
Killed in Action on 2 August 1915 and buried in Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie, France.
