I'm a bit embarrassed about asking for help with this man but..........
He's is listed on the Dumfries War Memorial and on the St. John's Episcopal Church Memorial as Private D.M.R. McCulloch, Royal Scots.
I cannot find a likely candidate anywhere and with that set of initials it really shouldn't be that difficult. Should it??????

Just a random thought - his initials DMR is also the abbreviation for Drummer.
However I still couldn't find him. There was a Drummer McCulloch killed in 1914 but he was Royal Scots Fusiliers and I couldn't connect him to Dumfries.
If the church still holds an order of service for the unveiling of their memorial, that may give more info - other than that, a trawl through the papers - if only they were digitised!

To cut a long story short!
I found this man in the Registers of Soldiers effects:
Maxwell Ross Pte.3436 12th Royal Scots died 27/9/1915 at Loos and there is a scribbled note "Alias McCulloch"
Father James, Mother Elizabeth.
SDGW has him as Maxwell Ross - Born and Resident in Dumfries.
As Paul suggested I did a bit of rummaging around in the local newspaper and found this in the Dumfries and Galloway Standard of 27/11/1915:
"Private Maxwell Ross, 12th Royal Scots, is reported wounded. A letter sent from his home at 6 English Street, Dumfries has been returned marked “wounded” No other information is available."
I thought it Interesting that there was no mention of who had sent the letter so into the census looking for James and Elizabeth.
There are a lot! - but up popped all sort of Service and Pension records for James McCulloch (or McCullock) of 6 English Street, Dumfries.
Most refer to his wife Elizabeth but there was one which refers to children, Kenneth and DERMID and the 1901 census has:
6 English Street - James McCullogh 39 Elizabeth McCullogh 39 Dermid McCullogh 4 Kenneth McCullogh 3 Edith McCullogh 4 Mo.
They are still there in 1911 but as McCulloch.
So it looks as though D.M.R. McCulloch was Dermid (Maxwell Ross) McCulloch.
ROSS, MAXWELL
Rank:Private
Service No:3436
Date of Death:27/09/1915
Regiment/Service:Royal Scots 12th Bn.
Panel Reference:Panel 10 to 13.

Blimey. That's some amount of digging. Maxwell Ross = Dermid McCulloch! Thank heavens for the Registers of Soldiers effects and local newspapers.
Well done Ken. I am tipping my virtual hat to you over this one.
Kind regards
Adam |
