A bit of a puzzle. There is just one S. HUME of the UK Army who died in WW1.
HUME, SAMUEL.
Rank:Gunner
Service No:28627
Date of Death:28/07/1917
Age:40
Regiment/Service:Royal Horse Artillery "F" Bty. 14th Bde.
Grave Reference:I. L. 36.
Cemetery:COXYDE MILITARY CEMETERY
Additional Information:Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hume, of Dumfries. Served in the South African Campaign.
He is named on the Dumfries WM as GUNNR. SAMUEL HUME, R.F.A.
However the Markinch WM in Fife has GR. SAMUEL HUME, RFA.
and I'm dashed if I can see why!
Samuel served with the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa and the joined the Royal Horse Artillery. He was a reservist and was mobilised in August 1914 (SDGW has enlisted London, which makes sense) He was a coachman to local "big-wig" in Dumfries.
Curiously on "Soldiers effects" his legatee was his mother in law Jessie C Groome but I cannot link that name to either Dumfries or Markinch.
I'm beginning to go round in circles (what's new) so any ideas, please???? _________________ Ken |

Hold it! Just found this!
Dundee Courier 31 May 1911
Terrorising a debtor at Markinch
Samuel Hume, coachman, Kirkbrae, Markinch, was convicted on evidence at Cupar yesterday of having, at 30 Balgonie Houses, Coaltown of Balgonie, occupied by Guiliane Ghalloni, miner, threatened violence and committed a breach of the peace...........
So a bit unsavoury but the link to Markinch is made. _________________ Ken |
