Does anyone know where Turnbul'sl Centenary VC stone will be placed ? I have just returned from Oban where he is remembered on the local War Memorial. I finally found the personal memorial in his honour in the Lancaster Hotel in the town. Seemingly he was working in the store of WA Chalmers when the war broke out and he returned to Glasgow to enlist. The Lancaster is the former home of the Royal Highland Yachting club of which Turnbull was a member. The memorial was carved after his death and takes the form of a wooden panel depicting a Highland warrior which has over the years been exposed to the elements as it was originally on the outside of the building. It is now in a glass frame in the foyer and reception area of the hotel. Turnbull was born in Glasgow but I think that Oban may make a claim to have his Centenary stone laid in the town because of his working links. |

My understanding of the rules for these stones is that it will be given to the council responsible for his place of birth and that they will decide where it should go - not necessarily his exact place of birth. For example James Mackenzie, born in New Abbey, stone given to D&G council and they decided to install it at Maxwelltown.
So I expect that the final placing would be decided by Glasgow if that is his place of birth.

Thanks for that information Paul. I will follow it up with GDC. I will post photos of the personal memorial on here later when I get home. Please note that there is a fibre glass copy of the original memorial on the facade of The Lancaster Hotel in Oban. |
