I'm working on the roll of honour for Rothesay and Bute, and there are some citations for the Croix de Guerre published in it - these are in French, and I'm looking for a translation of them. Can anyone help?

(Possibly?) Edinburgh Gazette, 4th December 1919, Issue 13533, Page 3768:
Pte. J. Buchanan
I can only remember basic school French but it looks as though it might contain the same details

Type them up and put it into Google Translate. I've used it a few times and I have to say it is pretty accurate.
Thanks

Re Sgt Morrison - I think the Citation refers to getting ammunition to the infantry by haversack when the waggons were destroyed.
There are two LGaz entries for him.
Meritorious Service Medal on 3 May 1919 page 6868
and C de G on 3 October 1919 page 12407
but I don't see a citation for either. _________________ Ken |

Thanks everyone for the help so far.
The book contains a citation for the MSM for Sgt Morrison but it is fairly general and doesn't mention any specific action - certainly nothing mentioning ammunition.
I'll give Google Translate a go, although from past experience I have found the results to be somewhat mixed. |

Here's the first one. I'm not very familiar with military terminology (French or English), but hope it makes sense!
HQ 7th October 1918
General order no.2
The general commander of the 5th Army cited for Regimental Orders the soldiers whose names follow:-
Robert Morrison
Distinguished himself by his bravery during the latest operations in Epornay.
Ensured that the infantry were resupplied in the most unfavourable conditions: seeing that the lorries were unusable, organized haversacks to transport the supplies, thanks to which, in spite of heavy shelling, the infantry were resupplied.
The General Commander of the 5th Army. Guillaumaut |

French War Cross
with Bronze Star
James Buchanan
Showed exceptional bravery during the advance on Gheluwe on 14th October 1918. When his company attacked the various machine gun nests and points where there was resistance, he was always at the front, without paying attention to the danger and thus set a good example to his comrades. The under-officers of his company having been killed in the advance, he took command of his fellow soldiers whom he led forward with success.
This is the one Anne posted - wish I'd read it first!!! |

Greek War Cross
Army Agenda of April 29th 1919
In view of the suggestions proposed after the report 5584 by the 14th DI (could be Infantry Division???) with regard to moral rewards to the English officers and soldiers who collaborated with the Greek factions/guards during the latest operations.
I AWARD
the war cross, 11th class to
Captain M Buchanan
Commander (?) T H Smith
because, during combat since 10-17 September they have shown themselves to be skilful and active in the support of the advance of our regiments, in that their units are standing up to all dangers, to the risk of their own lives.
L Paraskvopoulos
Hope this is of some use. On Monday, I'll be back at work and can maybe catch one of my colleagues if there are specifics you want checked - a history teacher should know about these things surely!! |
