Today I received a surprise copy of the newsletter of the COMBINED OPERATIONS ASSOC and this publication has a copy photograph and story on the NEW COMMANDO MEMORIAL :
Pictured are Ben Blowers (apprentice) and Steve Cooper (craftsman ) of FORESTRY COMMISSION with Tommy Hamilton, a local ARDENTINNY resident andex Military man at the unveiling of a new awr memorial installed at ARDENTINNY.
The Forestry Commission , in conjunction with the COMMANDO ASSOCIATON , agreed to build and locate this memorial nearer to the beach side of the Ardentinny Site .
The memorial is to commemorate the Commandos past involvement and use of the area where between 500 and 600 men and women were housed and trained for the war effort .
Steve Cooper stated "it was nice to be able to put our knowledge of stone building into such a worthwhile project."
Tommy Hamilton said ," I wish to express my gratitude to the Forestry Commission , on behalf of the COMMANDO ASSOCIATION , and we are very pleased with the finished project ."

Pat - I wonder if this is the memorial refered to at
http://ardentinny.org/2011/03/05/world-war-ii-relic-finally-disappears-from-glenfinart-bay-ardentinny/
the site of the former HMS Armadillo at Genfinart Bay, Ardentinny?
This base was used for the training of Royal Navy Beach Commandos whose job was to be first ashore to set up a base for the Beach Commander.
The article, from 2011, refers to a "commando memorial" being moved temporarily next to an information board. _________________ Ken |
