Private James McGowan is listed on the Penninghame Parish War Memorial in Newton Stewart. He is listed after William and Samuel McGowan who were brothers - and who had a younger brother, James.
However this James survived the war. He registered his mother's death in 1929.
Thanks to "Stewartry" I know that there is a partial service file which shows that he did enlist in November 1914 (Pte2468 KOSB) but was discharged in April 1916 due to being underage at enlistment (about 15)

My problem is that I cannot find another candidate and the sequence of names keeps me coming back to James as being listed on the WM in error. (but, the United Free Church Memorial only has William and Samuel)

The only newspaper report I can find is for William (d.29/5/1918) which refers to Sam being killed at Gallipoli (d.12/7/1915) and that "his only surviving brother is serving in the Army" - So it looks as though James had re-enlisted by 1918.

I'm beginning to go round in circles - fresh eyes needed, please.

Regarding the sequence of names on this memorial there are for example six STEWARTs - Keith, John, and then four brothers, Charles (the eldest), James, William and Peter (the youngest - but died first)
