| I don't think I did this memorial justice - it was blowing a gale and raining hard at the time! I will return when the light is better and show you more. It is thought to be unique among Scottish memorials (unless you know different) in that it takes the form of a rock garden with a burn flowing through it under a replica of the Cuddy Bridge. It was designed by Sidney H. Miller and constructed around 1928. |

ARDLER
Pvt. George Dargie, Royal Scots, eldest son of Mr James Dargie, Main Street, Ardler, was killed in action on 31st July, Mrs Dargie having received the information from a younger son, also in the Royal Scots. Deceased, who was aged 31 years and married, was before enlisting an insurance agent at Innerleithen, where his wife and two children reside. He had been over a year at the front.

As Ian points out this memorial is probably unique in that it takes the form of the parish it represents. Here is more detail from page 5 of The Scotsman of Monday, 5th December 1921
Innerleithen
The war memorial for Innerleithen which has been erected on a central site of the town adjoining the new Burgh Buildings (the gift of Mr Henry Ballantyne, Walkerburn), was unveiled on Saturday afternoon. The memorial is a rock garden representation of Leithen Valley, with Roman Bridge and Leithen Water in miniature.
Colonel Robertson, O.B.E., in unveiling the tablet, said that the town and parish answered nobly the country's call. Out of a population of less than 3000, more than 400 men of these voluntarily left their all to offer their lives for their beloved land. Of that gallant band, 72 had sacrificed self, and died the most glorious death that man could die. Provost Mathieson, in accepting custody for the Local Authority, said it was a fitting monument, as it was a "Garden of Memories." A guard of honour of 110 ex-soldiers was present. The local pipe band played "The Lament" and the Boy Scout buglers sounded the Last Post.
