I've had a couple of cases recently where the SNWM database has a Date of Death of 01/01/1900.
I think that Derek (Delboy) mentioned this before but I can't remember where.
Lt. Co. Roger Binks tells me (via an e-mail discussion) that this is a default setting where the DoD is not known to SNWM.
There are 6904 names on the WW1 database and 757 on the WW2 database. Of these some 4200 are "Australian" and some 700 are "Womens Services".
I have provided information to confirm an actual DoD for those people I have been researching. _________________ Ken |

Yeah Ken that was me a while ago.
So it's a default date, that makes sense for it cropping up so frequently then.

Can i assume that they welcome amendments?
I certainly have at least two.

I've asked the same question but I didn't really get an answer - but I did get a "thank you" for the couple of cases I did submit.
It may be that they don't want to be overwhelmed (I think there are only a couple of people) but I don't know for sure.
Why not submit and see? _________________ Ken |

|
|
SNWM have now become so particular regarding addittions, insisting on full documentary evidence, service file, family link, etc I would not expect them to add / alter a date of date, regardless of how recorded at present, without a similar degree of evidence to confirm the date.
Here is their current Criteria
Given the length of time since the ending of both the First and Second World Wars, the Trustees have decided that there has been ample time for the immediate families of casualties to request that their names be added to, or existing entries be amended in, the various Rolls of Honour.
Bearing in mind that it is and was the wish of the immediate family of the casualty that was paramount, they have decided that they will accept such requests from only the following relations of a casualty:
Father or Mother
Husband or Wife
Son or Daughter
and, in each instance, the application must be accompanied by a signed statement that the applicant is the immediate next of kin of the casualty.
In exceptional circumstances they will consider a request which comes from:
a. the Regimental Headquarters of the casualty's regiment [or current successor regiment].
b. For members of the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines and the Royal Air Force the request must come from the Officer in Charge of the relevant Records Office.
c. Should the casualty have been killed in the armed forces of one of the former Dominions then the request should be made by the chief executive of the appropriate national ex-Servicemans organisation (such as the Australian Returned Servicemens League).
In all cases the applicant is responsible for providing full documentary proof of the casualty's service to support the application and similar documentary proof that the serviceman or woman has been accepted as a war casualty by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission [this may be in the form of a printed copy from the Commissions electronic Debt of Honour register]. Where the individual has not served in a Scottish Regiment (Royal Scots Greys, Scots Guards, Royal Scots, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Cmeronians (Scottish Rifles), Black Watch, Highland Light Infantry, Seaforth Highlanders, Gordon Highlanders, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) documentary proof that he was born in Scotland must be included.
Electronic copies of documents will not be accepted. _________________ Jim

Jim,
The two which i had in mind have a date of death in their CWGC particulars but not in their SNWM details.Do you think that they are likely to accept that evidence?Or does SNWM not accept CWGC information?
Cheers

It is worth a try but I suspect they would be more accommodating if you supplied the details from the Service death Return, which is an official record confirming the death.
If you want to write me direct with their details I can check other sources for you.

Lt Col Roger Binks is only part time in the post of Secretary of the SNWM at the castle in Edinburgh with a small staff as well in the office.
Recently I supplied copies of death certificates for 2 fishing boat casualties from Gamrie -Gardenstown that were 1918 casualties when the fishing boat was attacked by U boat off Skye . Lt Col Roger Binks accepted the death certificates and had the dates of death corrected on the SNWM roll . The two fishing boat casualties were correctly listed with the correct date of death on the CWGC index .

Unfortunately the Trustees tightened their criteria for accepting additions in response to me applying for 25 additions. I had submitted a proposal to them to support a funding application to pay for an assistant to work with the secretary to handle the results of my research.
I estimate there could be as many as 7500 omissions, throughout the Commonwealth, and had already identified nearly 200 with supporting documents.
In response they changed the rules making my research redundant. |

After the revamp of the SNWM website the default date is now 1970 for unknown dates of death.
I notified Roger and he says it's in hand. |
