Hi,
Do any members have an idea if there is a roll of honour for the WW1 dead from Falkirk?

It seems not Alex. This was discussed before without a conclusive answer.

No names and if there is a Roll of Honour anywhere, it must be a secret as I can't find out a sausage.

The memorial reads:
WW1 - over 1100 bairns......
WW2 - nearly 220.......
This suggests some count/list had been made.
Possibly the unveiling reports in the local paper may tell us if a roll of honour was compiled. |

Thanks Derek
Hi Anne - Yes I am trying to find if Pvt. S/32270 James Stuart Lamb of the 6th Battalion Cameron Highlanders is commemorated in Falkirk. He was killed in action near Loos on 4th October 1918 and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. He was born in Inverkeithing in about 1899 (son of Thomas and Mary Ann) and his UK Soldiers Died in the Great War entry records his place of residence as Falkirk.

Sorry Alex,
I thought I might have had something as I've got a 'collection' of Stirlingshire men .....
In this collection are 3 'Lambs', all from Stirling:
Lamb, George Ross, 2nd Lt., H.L.I.,
Lamb, John, Pte., Cameron Highlanders
Lamb, Matthew, Sgt., A. & S. H.
Where in Falkirk is James Stuart Lamb commemorated?
I've downloaded a copy of his Medal Roll Card - if you want a copy, send me a PM with your personal address.
Can't find his Service Records on Ancestry - possibly they didn't survive?

Hi Anne,
I have a subscription to ancestry and have all the census, MIC and casualty details for James. I also could not find his miltary details, so assume his is one of the missing records. The only information I have on his residency is that it was in Falkirk.
As Derek stated it appers that no roll of honour exists - which I find a great pity. I have seen that several members of the forum have done terrific work in creating such rolls in the past so would be more than willing to volunteer here if more like minded souls share an interest.
Rgds,

Sounds like a possible project for the forum that.
Falkirk is too big a place to not have the names of those who died in the wars recorded.

At the time of the 1911 census, the family (including James, age 12) were staying in Oxford Street, Newington, Edinburgh. The family (or at least the father - only the head of the household named in these documents) were still at that address at the time of the 1915 valuation.

At long last I've found out where the 'New' Rolls of Honour (researched by Provost Pat Reid) are held!!
They are in the Municipal Buildings in Falkirk Town Centre.
It's believed that they will be put on display in the near future in some sort of cabinet with pages being turned each day (or something along that line).
Falkirk Archives hope to have an on-line version very soon.

Alex, hopefully you're still checking in ....?
Thanks to one of the wonderful ladies at Falkirk Archives, I've managed to get a copy of a Death Notice from the Falkirk Herald for James Stuart Lamb.
Falkirk Herald, Edition 19th October 1918.
"Lamb - Killed in action, October 4th, James Stuart Lamb, Cameron Highlanders, aged 19 years, beloved and only son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Lamb, 164 Graham's Road, Falkirk; deeply mourned." |
