Hi,

I would be grateful if any members have any information on the following soldier:

Pvt 27834 George Chisholm Irvine, enlisted Inverkeithing on 12th December 1915 in the 13th Battalion Royal Scots - KIA 28th Aug 1916. My research tells me that his real name was John Nicholson originally from 30 Greenside Row in Edinburgh. Father's name William - Mother's name Jane.

I know that Pvt Chisholm is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial in France but would be interested if any members could inform me whether George/John are commemorated on a memorial in Edinburgh

Rgds,
Alex

Alex

His recod does confirm he served under an alias but CWGC were not made aware of this, otherwise they would record it. His NOK did not provide any details additional to the basic info provided by the Army.

I can have the addition of the alias to the CWGC record looked at if you want.

Hi Jim,

If you are able to check please do.

The CWGC have been very helpful in correcting a number of errors I have found during my research of men with a connection to Inverkeithing (my home town).

Are you able to help with this one as well? Pvt S/14467 John Harrison KIA 20/12/1915 and buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery in Northern France. Some records show he was born in Inverkeithing. For sure, his mother was called Joan and the CWGC incorrectly record her name as Johan. It pains me when I read how the poor boy's record is written. I know the CWGC have strict rules on how details can be changed but if you have any influence it would be great to see this wrong righted.

Rgds,
Alex

Alex

Will gather the details of Nicolson alias Irvine and put them forward.

Will check on Harrison. Johan was a fairly common spelling of the name and may well be how it was provided to CWGC by the NOK.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the offer of help.

I never new that Johan could be used as a way of spelling Joan. 54 years of writing/speaking Scots and I am still learning the lingo Smile

Rgds,
Alex

Alex

I later checked the 1911 Census. His mother and sister are recorded there as Johan. John was born at Kircaldy.
