This man should not be hard to find but.........
On Maxwelltown/Troqueer WM in Dumfries
STRINGFELLOW, JOHN T. L/C R.EA.
The local RoH gives his name as John Taylor Stringfellow but no other details.
The best I can do is a MIC for L/Cpl. 16533 Sherwood Foresters - John T.

I've looked at both sets of photos (Adam and Spoons) and the Regiment is R.EA. but I've no idea what that might be. HELP!

Hi Ken,

I think that the unit should read R.F.A., however, the dot after F makes it look like E

Although no Maxwelltown connection, SDGW gives a possible RFA man as:

Name: John Stringfellow
Enlistment Location: Liverpool
Residence: Kirkdale, Lancs
Death Date: 8 Oct 1916
Death Location: France & Flanders
Rank: BDR.
Regiment: Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery
Number: L/2283
Type of Casualty: Killed in action

L/Cpl on the memorial would fit with bombardier.

Stuart

CWGC
Name: STRINGFELLOW, J
Rank: Bombardier
Service No: L/2283
Date of Death: 08/10/1916
Age: 38
Regiment/Service: Royal Field Artillery "A" Bty. 148th Bde.
Grave Reference: V. B. 2.
Cemetery: GUARDS' CEMETERY, LESBOEUFS
Additional Information: Son of John and Bessie Stringfellow, of Liverpool; husband of Annie Stringfellow, of 24, Simpson St., West Perth, Western Australia.

Nothing in the Scottish born war returns.

There is a marriage in 1923 in Dumfries for a 21 year old John Taylor Stringfellow whose parents are described as John Stringfellow (deceased) and Annie (Thom) Stringfellow.
So the parents names match the extra info for the CWGC entry above with the father being deacesed also making sense.

Derek.

Thank you Anne, Derek and Stuart.

Just to tie all your efforts together:
John Taylor Stringfellow was born December Q 1877 in Liverpool.
(38 at death)
He married Annie McBurnie Thom in March Q 1901 in West Derby.
(near Liverpool)
John Taylor Stringfellow Thom was born 13/4/1900 at 93 English St. Dumfries - the illegitimate son of Annie Thom (Domestic Servant)
Annie was born in 1877 in Troqueer.

So Bombardier (L/2283) J. Stringfellow is our man and there's even a Troqueer link Very Happy
