Can anyone help me with the one name on the Dalbeattie WW2 Memorial that I have not been able to identify?
The inscription reads: PTE. ROBERT I. McCONNELL, SEAFORTHS.

I've tried all the permutations of McConnell that I can think of but neither CWGC nor SNWM appears to list him. (or is it just me again?)
Confused

I can't find him either. Geoff's WW2 search engine failed to turn up R I McConnell in any Regiment/Corps and no McConnel in Seaforths. He is on the Dalbeattie RBL memorial so perhaps they might know a little more about him? My usual WW1 tricks (MIC, Service Record, SDGW) won't work of course. Other than that it is a trawl through the local papers at the time I think.

The connection to Dalbeattie doesn't seem obvious. He comes up on SNWM as

Surname McCONNELL
Firstname Robert
Service Number 238023
Date Death 20/03/1917
Decoration
Place of birth Kilchrennan Argyllshire
Other 5th Bn. formerly 3898 A. & S.H.
SNWM roll THE SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.

Note also the difference in date of death.

There is an RAF , R S McKinnell. I think from Dumfries
It's worth trying any variation.
