If anyone is intending to visit the Glasgow university library, there are some papers in the special collections for Jessie Marion King concerning the design for Balmaclellan war memorial. I would like firstly to confirm if her design was the one used for construction and secondly to have a copy of one of her original sketches if possible.

Thanks on the offchance

\Paul

Paul,

My 2 daughters are at Glasgow and could look it up for you, but they say it can take up to 5 days for a photocopying request to be processed, and you can order copies by post so it might be as quick for you to do it yourself. All the details and the form to send are on this page -

This is the full reference for the Balmaclellan drawing

I doubt if Jessie King was involved in the Balmaclellan memorial as it looks like a straight forward masons obelisk but it would be very interesting to see what her design was. I remember seeing a Charles Rennie MacKintosh exhibition years ago which included two of his sketches of designs for a war memorials and they were never realised.

Thanks, I hadn't found the page where you can order remotely so I think I will try that option. Like you I was surprised to see an artist associated with this memorial but I would like to see it anyway. There are actually 16 documents in the collection associated with Balmaclellan memorial so she must have had serious hopes of getting the commission.
