hi guys
curiousity has got the better of me just this last few days and allthough i'm reletively new to the forum and after all the site is about scottish war memorials has anybody ever done any research on the memorials in CORBY northamptonshire as i'm no doubt you would be aware that there has been a large contingancy of scots there for many a year.
what with the steel works and mining that went on from the turn of the 1900's as you know a large number scots travelled south for the work but some then went back north to enlist so that they could join scottish regiments

Not research, but I have photographed quite a few memorials in Northamptonshire when I worked in Northampton for just over a year. I have a full set of photos of the Northampton county memorial which has over 3,000 names. Let me know if you would like photos of any particular memorials and I will see if I have them.

hi paul
that would be great i'll let you know which ones i will want.
the basics of what i'm going to try. is to work out the number of scots that were registered in corby at the time against those that were later killed in action whilst fighting in scottish regiments and also try and associate where they came from in scotland to start with so you can see that it might take just a wee while so any help would from time to time would be most appreciated.
with regards.
james

I fear that might be a difficult job. I have just checked around 15 of the Northamptonshire memorials I have photographed and not one has regiment listed.

Gents

As far as I am aware the big migration to Corby from Lanarkshire started in the 1930s so it's probaby worth starting research on the Second World War memorials.

Cheers

Just had a couple more thoughts.

1. Was working in a steel works a reserved occupation. If so perhaps many of those who moved South wouldn't have enlisted?

2. Compare the Second World War names from places like Motherwell, Bellshill, Holytown etc against the memorials in and around Corby to see if any names match

hi adam
i think you might be right since my last mail i spoke to an old freind of the family and was told that there were a few that did go back but they tended to be itinerant workers so were not on the local listing's .
but i did find one slightly amusing point when he said to look into the villages round my area especially my own [woodford] which has 2 great war memorials due to an arguement between the church and the non-conformist's .
it got me wondering did this happen a lot ?
anway thanks for the advice.
regards.
james
