My grandfather John Daly was killed on 18th July 1918 and is buried in Mont Noir Military Cemetary.I have had two different service numbers, but the one the R.I.F. gave him is 24896.He was born in Tartlaghan, lived in Armagh, moved to Coatdyke and married a local girl. His children were born and raised in East Stewart St,Coatbridge. He enlisted in Hamilton. However, his name does not appear on the Coatbridge War Memorial in any form...either as Daly...or misplelt Daley/Dailey/Dalay as it was in his medal roll card, his service record and even the 1901 census record.
I wish to see his name added to the memorial ...how is this to be done?

I think the first thing you need to do is find out from local papers at the time what the criteria for inclusion on the memorial was. If he didn't meet them in the 1920s that might explain his non-appearance on the memorial.

My gt grand parents had to pay to get my gt uncle's name included. Many men with a connection with the village were not listed. Could that be why a name is left off? Anne |

Thank you both for your replies.I shall look into your suggestions and hopefully get an idea where to go from here.
Thanks again,

There is an entry to John Daley in the book "Coatbridge and The Great War" by Rev. Samuel Lindsay, published in 1919.
Under the chapter devoted to The Royal Irish Fusiliers the following entry occurs:
Daley, John Pte.,
16 East Stewart Street,
1326. 6th Batt.
His name appears amongst the men who served and survived the war. His name is not included in the list of killed.
This appears to raise further questions. The compiler of the RoH was unaware of John's death when the book was published. Is it possible that the RoH was used as a definitive guide when the Memorial was built? |

Thank you for this.Recently a poster elsewhere suggested, that though there were many similarities that the John buried at Mont Noir may not be my grandfather John.
Our info had been that he died in WW1.
If the man you mention above is him ....he may have survived the war.I shall now look into this possibility.Sadly there are no elderly surviving relatives I know of to quiz regarding this hypothesis.
I shall continue to look into the ommission of the John who is buried at Mont Noir from the local memorial, as he ought to be there as a local man, whether it is my relative or not.
Off to check the survivors records now, your help appreciated so far, thank you. _________________ If peace cannot be maintained with honour,it is no longer peace........Lord John Russell...

There are a number of discrepancies between the book and the war memorial. Some men are listed on the memorial in one regiment, and listed under another in the book.
I don't think the two were prepared in tandem, so the information is not exactly the same on both. |

Thanks a lot David.I have been searching for a very long time for grandfather John, who definitely lived in East Stewart Street,Coatdyke, near his in-laws, the Bennett family.
My late father had no memory of him as he was young around the time of the war and just after.
You will know the difficulties this creates when researching...it is one step forward and one back.A clue from a kind poster pushes you on and a remark elsewhere sets you back.I am not phased but will continue on the seach. Many thanks to you and others here on the site for assistance.
