L-CPL. THOMAS TURNBULL. Canada
Thought to be:
Thomas Turnbull – age 22 – Lance Corporal (424053) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Thomas had been a farm servant at Harden Mains, Oxnam, Roxburghshire before he emigrated to Canada and he was farming when he enlisted at Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in February 1915. He was at Shorncliffe Camp in Kent in July 1915 and was posted to his battalion in France that same month. He was wounded and admitted to the 1st Canadian General Hospital in Etaples on 6 June 1916 before being evacuated to the Woburn Military Hospital, Bletchley, Bedfordshire where he died.
Born 16/3/1894 in Eccles, Berwickshire. (Source: Service record and 1901 census but I cannot trace)
The 1901 census shows him aged 7 (born Eccles) as the son of Thomas Turnbull and living with Thomas 52 and Thomas's sister Agnes 46 and his niece Jane 27, at Crailing, Roxburghshire.
His service record has his next of kin initially as his father Thomas of Kirkton, Hawick and later his cousin Mrs J. Stewart of Kaimflat, Ednam, Roxburghshire. Jane Turnbull married John Forbes Stewart in 1905 in Ednam.
Died of Wounds on 12 June 1916 and buried in Woburn (St. Mary) Churchyard, Bedfordshire. (CWG)

PTE. ANDREW TURNER. Camerons
Andrew Turner – age 23 – Private (S/15375) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Andrew was a railway surfaceman when he enlisted in November 1914. He had previously served for four years in the Territorial 4th King's Own Scottish Borderers. He was posted to the 2nd Camerons in France in March 1915 but was wounded a month later and evacuated to the 1st Scottish General Hospital in Aberdeen in May. He returned to France in October but suffered an accidental scalding and it was February 1916 before he was posted to the 1st Camerons. Andrew was killed five months later on the Somme.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of the late Andrew Turner (died 1909) and of Mary (Currie) Turner of Livingstone Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 23 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station, Edinburgh.

On 11 April 1928 the Imperial War Graves Commission wrote to the War Office to check the circumstances of Andrew's death as they had installed a grave marker in the Galashiels Eastlands Cemetery. The War Office confirmed that he had died in France. However the marker was still in place in 2016.

L-CPL. CECIL VALENTINE. Royal Scots
Cecil Valentine – age 19 – Lance Corporal (350517) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Cecil was living with his family in Leith when he enlisted as Private (2358) and he landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1915. He was wounded for the third time in May 1917, being hit in both legs, and he was evacuated to the 2nd Northern General Hospital in Leeds where he died.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of John and Margaret (Hay) of Wilderhaugh, Galashiels and of 23 Buchanan Street, Leith.
Died of Wounds on 10 June 1917 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

PTE. ROBERT VANCE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Vance – age 25 – Private (7275) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1887 in Galashiels as Robert McMillan Martin or Vance.
Son of the late Isabella (Martin) Vance (died 1896) of Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. JOHN VEITCH. Highland Light Infantry
I cannot identify this man.

SGT. CHRISTOPHER VICKERS. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Note: the family name was Vicars but Christopher used Vickers.
Christopher Vickers – age 29 – Sergeant (273280) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
Christopher Vickers was a woollen drawer, living at 14 Queen Street, Galashiels, when he married in 1912. He enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB as Private (6434) in June 1911 and served as Sergeant (200365) until he was posted to the 15th Royal Scots in March 1918. Christopher was killed a month later.
Born 1888 in Stirling as Vicars. Son of the late Catherine (Kean) Vicars (died 1906) and of Christopher Vicars or Vickers of 19a Wellington Street, Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Husband of Mary Munro (Jamieson) Vickers of 52 King Street, Galashiels who he married in 1912 in Galashiels. (from 1922 Mrs Ralph Dodds of 33 St. Rollox Street, Hebburn New Town, Co. Durham)
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

Alexander Waddell – age 22 – Lance Sergeant (6380) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of William and Elizabeth (Stewart) Waddell of 49 Stirling Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

William Waldie – age 34 – Lance Corporal (6881) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
William was an insurance superintendent with the Prudential Assurance Company, living at 3 St Andrew Street, Galashiels, when he enlisted in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1881 in Cavers, Roxburghshire. Son of the late James Waldie (died 1909) and of Helen (Scott) Waldie of 7 Dalkeith Place, Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Hawick Roll of Honour.

PTE. JAMES WALKER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Walker – age 18 – Private (42561) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James was posted as Private (67576) to the 15th Highland Light Infantry in France but he was transferred to the KOSB.

John was employed in the office of Abbotsford Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in April 1915. He joined his battalion in France in June 1915 but he was killed three months later.
Born 1898 in Galashiels. Son of Francis Inglis Walker and of Janet (Leitch) Walker of Elm Row, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 28 September 1915 and buried in St. Mary's A.D.S. Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

Robert Walker – age 29 – Lance Corporal (S/11922) 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Robert was employed by McCaig & Co. Wool Merchants in Galashiels when he enlisted.
Born 1888 in Selkirk. Son of Robert and Margaret (Ballantyne) Walker of Currer Street, Selkirk. Husband of Agnes Jane (Robertson) Walker of 49 Island Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 23 December 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Selkirk Roll of Honour.

PTE. WILLIAM WALKER. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Walker – age 18 – Private (6645) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911 William, aged 13, was living with his mother and family at 17 Queen Street in Galashiels. He was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was fatally wounded a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Motherwell, Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Son of William Walker and of Agnes (Brown) Walker of 17 Queen Street, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 12 July 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

William Turnbull Walker – age 18 – Private (6613) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1911, aged 13, he was living with his mother Jane and his younger brother John (all born in England) at 51 Ladhope Vale, Galashiels. He was a warper at Buckholm Mill in Galashiels and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB when he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1897 in Portsmouth, Portsea, Hampshire. Son of Jane Walker of 51 Ladhope Vale, Galashiels and of former Sergeant Instructor John Walker of 54 Macdougall Street, Parkhead, Glasgow.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

R'MAN JOHN WALLACE. LONDON R.
John Wallace – age 32 – Rifleman (375757) 1/8th Battalion, London Regiment (Post Office Rifles)
John was a designer at Botany Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted. He went to France in March 1918 but was killed two weeks later.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late Janet (Clapperton) Wallace (died 1913) and of James Wallace of Galashiels. Husband of Helen Cowan (Cass) Wallace of Woodside Place and of 6 Kirkbrae, Galashiels who he married in 1912 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 28 March 1918 and buried in Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-En-Gohelle, France.

C.S.M. DAVID WATSON. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David Watson – age 46 – Company Sergeant Major (6452) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David of 62 Douglas Street, Galashiels had been the drill instructor to the Galashiels detachment of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1869 in Fettercairn, Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire. Son of Alexander and Jane (Webster) Watson. Husband of Mary Bridget (Linahan) Watson who he married in 1893 in Devonport, Devon.
Their daughter, Mary Linahan Watson, was born in 1910 at Croft Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Robert Watson – age 20 – Private (7112) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a member of the Gala Harriers cross-country team. He enlisted in November 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Earlston Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Jane (Hunter) Watson of 52 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.

PTE. GEORGE D. WEBB. King's Own Scottish Borderers
George Dunlop Webb – age 25 – Private (200823) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George was an iron dresser at the Waverley Ironworks in Galashiels when he enlisted in December 1914 and as Private (7417) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. He was wounded at Achi Baba Nullah in July and was evacuated home. He married in Galashiels on 31 December 1915 before he rejoined his battalion in Egypt and he served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born 1892 in Galashiels as George Stewart Webb. Son of James Hilson Webb and of Bessina Morton (Dunlop) Webb of 190 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Husband of Alison Hogg (Dickson) Webb of 127 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married as George Stewart Dunlop Webb in 1915 in Galashiels while he was serving with the 1/4th KOSB.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.

Robert Weir – age 25 – Private (6558) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a textile designer with Gibson & Lumgair and living at Ashybank in Selkirk when he enlisted in the Territorial 4th KOSB in June 1913. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born December 1890 in Galashiels. Son of George and Janet Agnes (Sanderson) Weir of 272 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. JAMES WHITE. Canada
James White – age 26 – Private (A/40831 or 440831) 5th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
James was a lumberjack and a member of the local militia, the Prince Albert Volunteers, when he enlisted at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in January 1915. He sailed from Montreal in June and was posted to the 5th Battalion in France. He was wounded in June 1916 and treated in hospital in France before being evacuated to England. James rejoined his battalion in April 1917 but he was killed four months later.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] He was a triplet with sisters Isabella and Margaret who both died. Son of the late John White (died 1912 in Winnipeg) and of the late Margaret (Ford) White (died 1908) formerly of Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 15 August 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.
Also named on the Saskatchewan Virtual War Memorial.

Joseph White – age 30 – Private (437020) 49th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Joseph had served for seven years as Private (3491) in the Scots Guards including in the South African War before he emigrated to Canada. He was a camp cook when he enlisted at Edmonton, Alberta in March 1915. He sailed from Montreal in September and was posted to the 49th Battalion in France in October. Joseph was wounded in June 1916 and he died two weeks later in the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] His service record has born Edinburgh on 14/1/1883. Son of the late John White (died 1912 in Winnipeg) and of the late Margaret (Ford) White (died 1908) formerly of Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 19 June 1916 and buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France.

Percy John White – age 21 – Private (29871) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Percy enlisted in the 4th KOSB Reserve in December 1914.
Born 1897 in Selkirk as Percival John White. Son of John Henry White and of Agnes (Maclauchlan) White of Hawthorns Lodge, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

PTE. PETER WHITE. King's Own Scottish Borderers

PTE. PETER WHITE. Royal Scots Fusiliers
Peter Whyte – age 46 – Private (A/7770) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
Peter White had served as Private (2039) with the King's Own Scottish Borderers in the South African War and was a National Reservist in August 1914. As Peter Whyte he was posted to the 1st RSF in Belgium in November 1914. He was wounded in February 1915 and he was treated in hospital in Boulogne before rejoining his unit but he was killed in June.
Born 1869 in Dumfries. Son of the late James and Margaret White, formerly of High Street, Dumfries and of Channel Street and Overhaugh Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 16 June 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

PTE. ROBERT R. WHITE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Robson White – age 24 – Private (200758) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a ploughman at Blainslie Farm, Earlston, Berwickshire when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in Egypt as Private (7272) and served in Palestine where he was killed at Gaza.
Born Ednam, Roxburghshire as Robert White Robson. Son of Isabella Robson, later Mrs. William Hay of Langshaw Farm, Galashiels. Husband of Isabella Hogarth (Wilson) White who he married in April 1915 in Earlston, Berwickshire while he was serving with the 4th KOSB.
Missing in Action on 19 April 1917 and named on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
Also named on the Earlston Parish War Memorial.

John Whyte – age 37 – Sergeant (6125) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
John had over 20 years of service in the Volunteers and the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was fatally wounded a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1878 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of John and Jane (Speirs) Whyte formerly of St. Andrew Street, Galashiels. Husband of Jane (Grant) Whyte of 148 Lintburn Street, Galashiels and of Colinton House, Colinton, Edinburgh who he married in 1907 in Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 12 July 1915 and buried in Skew Bridge Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.

CPL. JOHN WHYTE. Canada
John Whyte – age 32 – Lance Corporal (830288) 8th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John had served his apprenticeship with the Bank of Scotland and had joined the Bank of British North America in Quebec in 1908. Later he worked in Montreal and at Ashcroft in British Columbia. He was with the Brandon branch in Manitoba when he enlisted in the 144th Battalion (Winnipeg Rifles) in December 1915. They sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in September 1916 and became a Reserve Battalion in England. John was posted to the 8th Battalion in France in January 1918.
Born 1886 in Galashiels. Son of the late James Whyte (died 1911) and of Agnes (Scott) Whyte of 32 Galapark Road, Galashiels. Brother of Peter Scott Whyte, Inspector of Poor, of 32 Galapark Road.
Killed in Action on 9 August 1918 and buried in Manitoba Cemetery, Caix, Somme, France.
The Bank of British North America and the Bank of Montreal merged in 1918 and John is named in the bank's Roll of Honour and on the memorial in the Head Office in Montreal.

SGT. MAJ. WILLIAM M. WHYTE. M.M. South Africa
Note most records have WHITE.
William Mark White – age 35 – Company Sergeant Major (4122) 1st Regiment, South African Infantry.
William joined the South African Constabulary in July 1901 and served until December 1907. He was working as a farrier/blacksmith when he enlisted in August 1915. He was wounded in action on three occasions, in February and in April 1917 and in July 1918. He was awarded a MM in 1918.
Born 1882 in Galashiels as William White. Son of the late James Whyte (died 1911) and of Isabella (Scott) White of 1 Douglas Place, Galashiels. He named his sister, Margaret Jane White of 1 Douglas Place, Galashiels, as his next of kin.
Killed in Action on 10 October 1918 and buried in Reumont Churchyard, Nord, France.

PTE. DAVID N. WHITELAW. King's Own Scottish Borderers
David Newlands Whitelaw – age 30 – Private (6867) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
David was a painter and had spent some time in the USA where he and other Border men introduced the seven-a-side rugby game. He returned home in 1913 and he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1885 in Symington, Lanarkshire. Son of James and Christina (Newlands) Whitelaw of 116 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. ROBERT WILCOX. Royal Scots
Not listed by CWGC.
Robert Wilcox – age 35 – Private (7354) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert enlisted in December 1900 and he was posted to the 1st Royal Scots in South Africa in July 1902 before moving to India in November 1902. He served there for six years before he returned home and was transferred the Army Reserve in January 1909. He was mobilised at the outbreak of war and since the 1st Battalion were still in India, he landed with the 2nd Royal Scots at Boulogne on 11 August 1914. He was wounded and evacuated back to the UK in September but was able to return in October. Due to illness he was evacuated again in April 1915 and was diagnosed with heart disease. Robert was discharged from the Army in June 1915 as no longer fit for war service and he died in his mother's home at Kirkbrae in Galashiels in 1917.
Born 1881 in Newington, Edinburgh. Son of Charles Edward Wilcox and of Mary Christina (Sneddon) Wilcox of 21 Hall Street and of 23 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.
Died on 19 February 1917.

PTE. HAROLD J. WILKIE. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Harold James Wilkie – age 19 – Private (6616) 4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Harold had been brought up by his aunt Mrs, Adam Wilkie of Melrose Road, Galashiels after the deaths of his parents. He was employed at Rosebank Mill in Galashiels and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He had been mobilised in August 1914 and had been with his battalion at Cambusbarron near Stirling when he returned home on leave but he became ill and he died in the Eastlands Hospital in Galashiels.
Born 1896 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Son of the late Ada Henrietta (Moore) Wilkie (died 1896 in Ontario) and of the late Gideon Thomson Wilkie (died 1904) of 328 Galapark Road, Galashiels. Gideon and his sons arrived from Canada in January 1900.
Died on Service on 22 February 1915 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery.

PTE. GEORGE D. WILLIAMSON. Machine Gun Corps
George Davidson Williamson – age 27 – Private (74108) 2nd Depot Company, Machine Gun Corps.
George enlisted as Private (8563) in the Cameron Highlanders in February 1909 and he was posted to the 2nd Battalion in India in December 1910. He was at Poona in August 1914 and returned to the UK before landing at Le Havre in December 1914. He was wounded and evacuated home in August 1915 and it was March 1916 before he was posted to the 1st Camerons in France. He was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the MGC in March 1918 but suffered gas poisoning in April and was evacuated home. George returned to France in October but became ill and was evacuated to the 2nd Western General Hospital at Hollywood Park, Stockport where he died.

George Wilson – age 23 – Private (24604) 7th/8th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1893 in Woodhead, Fyvie, Aberdeenshire. Son of James and Annie (Stephen) Wilson of 76 Halliburton Place, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 21 April 1917 and buried in Feuchy Chapel British Cemetery, Wancourt, France.

Robert James Wilson – age 27 – Private (29552) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a baker with the Co-operative Society and a member of the Territorial Band. He was posted to the 1st KOSB and landed with them at Gallipoli in April 1915. A year later the battalion moved from Egypt to France.
Born 1891 in Galashiels. Son of William and Robina (Hunter) Wilson of 32 St. Andrew Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 11 April 1918 and named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

Stewart Taylor Wilson – age 19 – Rifleman (R/39076) 9th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.
In 1911 Stewart, aged 12, was living with his parents in Galashiels. He enlisted as Private (M/299332) in the Army Service Corps but was posted to the KRRC in France.
Born 1899 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Charles Wilson (died 1916) and of Margaret Jane (Taylor) Wilson of 28 Livingston Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 21 March 1918 and named on the Pozieres Memorial, France.

PTE. THOMAS B. WISHART. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Thomas Brown Wishart – age 22 – Private (7247) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Thomas served his apprenticeship as a grocer with Lipton Ltd. at their Crieff branch in Perthshire and was employed in Galashiels when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1893 in Crieff, Perthshire as Thomas. Son of Thomas and Margaret (Brown) Wishart of 24 High Street, Crieff.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. ALEXANDER C. WOOD. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Alexander Cowan Wood – age 40 – Private (7152) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Alexander was a railway surfaceman with the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in August 1914. He had previously served during the South African War. He joined his battalion in France in December 1914 and in the following Spring he was wounded by the accidental discharge of a revolver.
Born 1875 in Stow, Midlothian. Son of the late John Wood (died 1882) and of the late Elizabeth (Cowan) Wood (died 1905) formerly of Galashiels. Husband of Margaret Hunter (Little) Wood of 80 Huddersfield Street, Galashiels who he married in 1899 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 3 September 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the North British Railway Company memorial in Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

SGT. ARCHIBALD R. WOOD. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Archibald Robertson Wood – age 29 – Sergeant (200215) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Archibald was a postman and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914. As Sergeant (4103) he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was wounded and made a prisoner of war after the battle at Achi Baba Nullah in July. Archibald died of dysentery in the hospital in Smyrna (now Izmir) in Turkey and was buried in the Anglican Cemetery there, but he was re-interred in Baghdad after the war.
Born 1889 in Galashiels. [Ladhope] Son of William Wood (Head Postman at Galashiels) and of Jane McGillivray (Murray) Wood of 175 Scott Street, Galashiels. Husband of Cecilia (Henderson) Wood of Townhead, Stow Midlothian who he married in 1914 in Montrose, Angus.
Died on Service on 29 October 1918 and buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq.

Kenneth Cameron Wood – age 20 – Private (6475) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Kenneth was a postman and as a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB he was mobilised in August 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1895 in Galashiels. Son of William Wood (Head Postman at Galashiels) and of Jane McGillivray (Murray) Wood of 175 Scott Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Their older brother John William Wood (born 1887), also a postman and Corporal (4102 & 201562) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers was wounded during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah on 12 July 1915 and was evacuated to hospital in Aberdeen. After the war became Head Postman at Galashiels and Regimental Sergeant Major in the Territorial 4th KOSB until he died on 5 March 1927.

LT. JAMES B. WOOD. Royal Naval Reserve
James Bertram Wood – age 30 – Engineer Lieutenant, H.M.S. Otranto, Royal Naval Reserve.
James was given a temporary commission on the Armed Merchant Cruiser “Otway” in April 1916 but she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC 49 in July 1917. James survived the sinking and was posted to the Armed Merchant Cruiser “Otranto” two months later. On the 6 October 1918 the “Otranto” was ferrying American troops to the UK when she collided with the troopship “Kashmir” off the island of Islay. She lost power, ran aground and broke up.
Born 1888 in Galashiels. Son of John and Jane (Bertram) Wood, of Ellangowan, Eildon Street, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 6 October 1918 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)

Peter Wood – age 20 – Private (16450) 9th Battalion, Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Peter was a spinner at Ladhope Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Boulogne in May 1915 but he was killed four months later during the battle at Loos.
Born 1894 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Christina (Finney) Wood of 21 Bridge Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 25 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. ROBERT WOOD. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Robert Wood – age 30 – Private (29628) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a woollen mill worker in Galashiels and a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and as Private (6524) he landed with the 1/4th battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915. At some point he transferred to the 6th KOSB.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of the late Sarah Wood (died 1907)
James lived with his uncle and aunt, James Crombie Forrest and Betsy or Elizabeth (Wood) Forrest, of 228 Galapark Road, Galashiels and he named them as his legatees.
Their own son James Forrest was killed six months later, on 22 November 1917,

LT. PERCIVAL WOODHEAD. King's Own Scottish Borderers
Percival Woodhead – age 32 – Lieutenant, 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Percival was a wool agent in Galashiels and a member of the Galashiels Amateur Operatic Society. He was also a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB and was commissioned from Lance Sergeant in September 1913. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1883 in Prestwich, Lancashire. Son the late Dick Woodhead (died 1902) and of Elizabeth Ann (Burton) Woodhead of 96 Hartington Terrace, Lidget Green, Bradford, Yorkshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the St. Wilfrid Church memorial Lidget Green, Bradford.

PTE. J. WRIGHT. King's Own Scottish Borderers
John Wright – age 29 – Private (7246) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1910 John and his wife Margaret were mill workers in Innerleithen, Peebleshire when they married and their daughter, Sarah Ann Gordon Wright, was born there in 1911. They were living in 17 Scott Street, Galashiels when John enlisted and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1885 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Son of Barbara Wright. Husband of Margaret Murray (Gordon) Wright of 17 Scott Street, Galashiels who he married in 1910 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

CPL. ROBERT WRIGHT. Royal Scots
Robert Wright – age 31 – Corporal (271352) 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots.
Robert was a mill worker when he enlisted as Private (7956) in the 3/4th King's Own Scottish Borderers in July 1915. He was promoted to Corporal in November 1915 and to acting Sergeant in June 1916. Robert was posted to the 15th Royal Scots in France in March 1918 and transferred to the 2nd Battalion in May but he was killed three months later.
Born 1887 in Galashiels as Robert Thomas Wright. [Ladhope] Son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Bell) Wright of 219 Halliburton Place, Galashiels. Husband of Isabella (Laurie) Wright of 213 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1912 in Galashiels.
Robert's service record shows Isabella and their son Thomas (born October 1914) living at Kiltanon Tulla in County Clare, Ireland in July 1920.
