L-CPL. ROBERT T. WRIGHT. Camerons
Robert Thomas Wright – age 19 – Private (9495) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Robert was serving as a Lance Corporal with his battalion in Edinburgh at the outbreak of war and they landed at Le Havre on 14 August 1914. Robert was killed on the Aisne a month later.
Born 1895 in Selkirk. Son of David Brown Wright and of Agnes Russell (Comrie) Wright of 26 Ash Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 14 September 1914 and named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France.


PTE. WILLIAM WRIGHT. King's Own Scottish Borderers
William Wright – age 20 – Private (23621) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 in Galashiels. Son of David Nicol Wright and of Isabella Jane (Pirie) Wright of 2 Balmoral Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 4 October 1917 and named on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

George Yeaman – age 22 – Private (200440) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of Andrew and Margaret (Robertson) Yeaman of 71 Kirkbrae, Galashiels.
Died of Wounds on 29 October 1918 and buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.

PTE. ALEXANDER J. YOUNG. Camerons
Alexander James Young – age 32 – Private (201396) 7th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
Alexander was employed at Comleybank Mill in Galashiels and was an Instructor at the South of Scotland Technical College when he enlisted as Private (5876) in 1916. He had been in France for a month when he was killed.
Born 1885 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of the late Margaret (Elder) Young (died 1909) and of ex-Inspector Roderick Young of Galashiels Burgh Police.
Brother of Miss Janet Lithgow Muir Young of "Eldersyde" Melrose Road, Galashiels.
Killed in Action between 23 and 28 April 1917 and buried in Tank Cemetery, Guemappe, France.
Row F in the cemetery is one big grave in which 64 men of the 7th Cameron Highlanders are buried.

William Young – age 24 – Private (S/14437) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.

George Young – age 30 – Private (7090) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George had previously served with the Border Volunteer Rifles and was an accountant living at 40 Meigle Street, Galashiels when he enlisted in November 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but he was killed a month later during the battle at Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1884 in Galashiels. Son of the late John Young (died 1912) and of Mary Ann Hamilton (Gray) Young of 40 Meigle Street, Galashiels, Husband of Mary Ann (Hawkins) Young) of The Grange, Galashiels who he married in April 1915 in Galashiels. From 1920 she became Mrs Thomas Scott Richardson of 334 Galapark Road and of 6 Gala Terrace, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

PTE. JAMES YOUNG. King's Own Scottish Borderers
James Young – age 23 – Private (13178) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James enlisted in Edinburgh and was on his way to join the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli when the troopship “Royal Edward” was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-14 in the Aegean August 1915. He survived the sinking and was evacuated home before joining the 6th KOSB in France in February 1916.
Born 1893 in Galashiels. Son of the late Margaret (Ferguson) Young (died 1899) and of William Young of Selkirk, of Galashiels and of 16 King Road, Portobello, Edinburgh.
William married Margaret (Wright) Darling in 1900 in Selkirk but she died in 1905 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 8 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


SGT. JOHN YOUNG. Seaforths
John Young – age 29 – Sergeant (S/2677) 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
In 1901 John, aged 14, was serving his apprenticeship as an iron founder in Edinburgh but by 1911 he was working as a railway signalman in Manchester. He was a Corporal when he landed with his battalion at Boulogne in July 1915.
Born 1887 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Margaret Swanston (Gillie) Young of 320 Galapark Road, Galashiels and of 17 Wardlaw Street, Edinburgh.
Missing in Action on 20 January 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

PTE. PETER YOUNG. Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)

Peter Young – age 32 – Private (345524) 14th (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry) Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Peter was an assistant weights and measures inspector when he enlisted as Private (3059) in the Fife & Forfar Yeomanry in Kirkcaldy, Fife in 1915. and he was a Lance Corporal before he went overseas in August 1916. He joined his unit in Egypt, where it became the 14th Black Watch in December 1916, and he then served in Palestine where he was killed at Jerusalem.
Born 1885 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Margaret Swanston (Gillie) Young of 320 Galapark Road, Galashiels and of 17 Wardlaw Street, Edinburgh. Husband of Agnes Meikle (Barlas) Young, of 3 Orangefield Place, Greenock who he was legally declared to have married in 1916 in Greenock.
Killed in Action on 27 December 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.

L-CPL. J. H. YOUNG. Canada
Note: All records show his name as just John Young but within his service record he used John Hardie Young on his soldier's will.
John Hardie Young – age 32 – Private (71232) 27th (City of Winnipeg) Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John was a carpenter when he enlisted in Winnipeg, Manitoba in October 1914. He had previously served for four years in the Territorial King's Own Scottish Borderers and was serving in the local militia regiment the 79th Cameron Highlanders of Canada. He sailed with his battalion from Quebec in May 1915 and they landed in France in September. John was killed at St. Eloi near Ypres.
Born 1884 in Lauder, Berwickshire as John Young. (his service record has 1886 in Dunbar)
Son of the late Agnes (Hardie) Young (died 1911) and of Thomas Young (shepherd) of Langshaw Farm, Galashiels, of Muirhouse Farm, Stow, Midlothian and of Moffat, Dumfriesshire.
Killed in Action on 6 April 1916 and buried in Ridge Wood Military Cemetery, Belgium.


L-CPL. ROBERT H. YOUNG. E. YORKS. R.
Robert Haig Young – age 21 – Lance Corporal (29715) 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment.
Robert enlisted as Private (05580) in the Army Ordnance Corps in March 1915 and landed in France in August. At some point he was transferred to the East Yorkshires and was captured at Mount Kemmel on 26 April 1918. He died of dysentery while a prisoner of war at Marpent near the border with Belgium.
Born 1896 in Galashiels. Son of John and Mary (Renwick)Young of 20 Scott Crescent, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 17 October 1918 and buried in Marpent Communal Cemetery, Nord, France.


STO. WILLIAM YOUNG. Royal Navy
William Young – age 26 – Stoker 1st Class (SS/116786) H.M.S. Grafton, Royal Navy.
William enlisted in February 1915 and joined the cruiser "Grafton" at Gallipoli in July where she carried out shore bombardments. The “Grafton” helped to cover the evacuations from Anzac Cove and from Cape Helles in January 1916 and was active in the Mediterranean until the end of the war.
William died of pneumonia.
Born 1892 in Galashiels. Son of James Young and of Margaret Jane (Brown) Young of Livingston Place, Galashiels, later Mrs. Margaret Knight of 22 Orchard Street, Partick, Glasgow.
Died on Active Service on 29 November 1917 and buried in Port Said War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

John Baxter – age 23 – Driver (T/154831) 18th Division Ammunition Company, Royal Army Service Corps.
John was educated at Galashiels Academy and was a partner in the family drapery business when he enlisted. He was wounded in France in 1940 and evacuated back to the UK but he was killed in a motor cycle accident near Norwich in Norfolk.
Born 1916 in Galashiels. Son of Walter and Adeline Sarah (Dove) Baxter of Springbank, Tweed Road, Galashiels. Husband of Alison Clark (Hutton) Baxter, of 309 Galapark Road, Galashiels who he married in 1938 in Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 2 September 1940 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial and on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.


PTE G. O. BENNETT, K.O.S.B.
George Oliver Bennett – age 25 – Private (3191378) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
George had joined up in 1939 and was evacuated from Dunkirk in May/June 1940. He returned to France on 6 June 1944, landing at Queen Beach on D-day but he was killed three days later.
Born 1919 in Galashiels. Son of George Oliver and Janet Dunbar (Cook) Bennett, of Galashiels. Husband of Mary (Clark) Bennett of Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1940 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 9 June 1944 and buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.


PTE. J. BOLAND, K.O.S.B.
James Boland – age 20 – Private (3189408) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James died in the Seafield Cottage Hospital in Buckie, Rathven, Banff as he result of an accidental gunshot wound.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of William and Jane (Douglas) Boland of 79 Glendinning Terrace, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 7 July 1942 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

STKR. G. S. BROWN, R.N.
George Scott Brown – age 26 – Stoker 1st Class (P/KX 111269) H.M.S. Southwold, Royal Navy.
George was employed at a dyeworks in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1940. The Escort Destroyer “Southwold” was on convoy duty near Malta, when she struck a mine. She suffered major damage and flooding of the engine room and an officer and five ratings were killed. The ship was taken under tow but later sank.
Born 1916 in Galashiels. Son of Joseph Scott Brown and Mary (Melrose) Brown, of 7 Park Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 24 March 1942 and named on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.


PTE. R. S. BURGESS, K.O.S.B.
Robert Scott Burgess – age 20 – Private (3189098) 2nd Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a railway fireman when he enlisted in 1941. He joined his battalion in India in June 1943. 2nd KOSB had been in the East since 1923. In November 1942 they moved to Peshawar and after jungle training they sailed with the 7th (Indian) Division to Burma in September 1943.
Born 1923 in Galashiels. Son of Melville Dobson Burgess and of Euphemia Inglis (Scott) Burgess of 76 St. Andrew's Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 21 January 1944 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.
Also named on the Galashiels Old Church memorial.


F.SGT. P. BURT, R.A.F.
Peter Burt – age 21 – Flight Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1551748) 635 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Peter was an apprentice turner in Comely Bank Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted. He had already completed over forty operational sorties when his Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Downham Market in Norfolk for a raid on Kiel but the aircraft was shot down by a night fighter. Four of the crew were killed and were buried in Struxdorf Cemetery in Schleswig-Holstein, to the north-west of Kiel, but they were re-interred in Kiel in September 1947.
Born 1923 in Shotts, Calderhead, Lanarkshire. Son of Andrew Burt and of Elizabeth Frame (Brown) Burt of 22 Wilderhaugh, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 26 August 1944 and buried in Kiel War Cemetery, Germany.

PTE. H. K. CARRUTHERS, K.O.S.B.
Harry Kigie Carruthers – age 24 – Private (3191063) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Harry was a plumber in Galashiels when he enlisted. He came from a sporting family and was a rugby player, including with the KOSB team which won the Northern Command Championship in 1943/44. The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on 15 June 1944 and fought through France, Belgium and Holland. Harry was killed near Massbree, Netherlands, on the German border, but was re-interred in Venray in September 1946.
Born 1920 in Galashiels. Son of the late Henry Kigie Carruthers (died 1930) and of Mary Dryden (Purves) Carruthers of 70 Victoria Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 3 December 1944 and buried in Venray War Cemetery, Netherlands.


PTE. T. CASS, GORDON HGHRS.
Thomas Cass – age 33 – Private (3184402) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Thomas been in the army for fourteen years and had served in Gibraltar and Palestine before moving to Singapore in 1936. Thomas became a prisoner of the Japanese at the fall of Singapore.
Born 1908 in Stobhill, Midlothian. Son of the late Thomas Cass (died 1915) and Jane (Smail) Cass of 30 Queen Street, Galashiels who had married in Stobhill.
Died of Wounds on 25 February 1942 and named on the Singapore Civil Hospital Grave Memorial, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore.
His father Thomas Cass, Private (7314) 2nd King's Own Scottish Borderers died of his wounds on 22 January 1915 in the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne.


PTE. T. CAVERHILL, K.O.S.B.
Thomas Caverhill – age 23 – Private (3188628) 4th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 4th KOSB landed at Ostend in Belgium in October 1944 and fought through Holland into Germany where Thomas was killed near Issum. He was re-interred in April 1947.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of John William and Catherine (McDonald) Caverhill of Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 9 March 1945 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

GNR. J. CHISHOLM, R.A.
James Chisholm – age 34 – Gunner (1702914) 69 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery.
During the Second Chindit Expedition from March 1944 W, X, Y, and Z Troops of the 69 Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, equipped with 40mm Bofors, were used to defend the jungle landing grounds.
Born 1909 in Galashiels as James Macfarlane Chisholm. Son of Alexander and Annie (Macfarlane) Chisholm. Husband of Elizabeth Weir (Cassels) Chisholm of 106 Newlands Road, High West Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne who he married in 1936 in Holytown, Lanarkshire.
Missing in Action on 24 May 1944 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.


PTE. J. A. CLARK, QUEEN'S R. R.
John Alexander Clark – age 28 – Private (1589059) 2/6th Battalion, The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)
Born 1916 in Galashiels. Son of John and Janet Leyden (McGuinness or McGinnes) Clark of Galashiels who married in 1908 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 9 September 1944 and buried in Coriano Ridge War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.
Coriano Ridge was the last important ridge in the way of the Allied advance in the Adriatic sector in the autumn of 1944. Its capture was the key to Rimini and eventually to the River Po. German parachute and panzer troops, aided by bad weather, resisted all attacks on their positions between 4 and 12 September 1944. (Source: CWGC)


SGT.NAV. D. W. CONSTANCE. R.A.F.V.R.
Dennis Winstone Constance – age 22 – Sergeant/Observer (1101609) 9 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Dennis was educated at Galashiels Academy and was employed at Comely Bank Mill in Galashiels when he was called up in February 1941. His Lancaster bomber had taken off from RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire for a raid on Essen but the aircraft crashed at Angermund. The crew were buried in Dusseldorf North Cemetery but were re-interred in January 1947.
Born 1920 in Galashiels. Son of Harold Winstone Constance and Emily Reese (Massie) Constance of 22 Forest Gardens, Galashiels. Husband of Edith Joyce (Timms) Constance of Leeds, Yorkshire who he married in August 1942 in Leeds.
Killed in Action on 16 September 1942 and buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.

PTE. J. J. CROSSAN, HONG KONG V.D.C.
James Joseph Crossan – age 27 – Private, Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps
James was a prison officer and was part of the Stanley Platoon. He was killed during the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong.
Born 1914 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Son of the late John Crossan (died 1935) and of Elizabeth (Penny) Crossan of 50 St Andrew Street, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 24 December 1941 and named on the Sai Wan Memorial, Hong Kong, China.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


TPR. J. R. CROSSAN, R.T.R.
John Robert Crossan – age 31 – Trooper (7941071) 1st Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps.
John was a gardener at St Andrew's Convent, The Stirches, Hawick, Roxburghshire when he enlisted and had served in North Africa where he was in the first tank to enter Tunis. They were subsequently involved in the fighting in Italy before taking part in the Battle of Normandy. John was killed near Caen and was re-interred at Bayeux in November 1945.
Born 1913 in Galashiels. Son of the late Sergeant James Crossan (died 1918) and of Christina Moore (Menzies) Crossan of Galashiels. Husband of Christina Little (Black) Crossan of 53 Halliburton Place, Galashiels who he married in 1938 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 2 August 1944 and buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.
His father, James Crossan, Sergeant (200340) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers died of wounds on 7 October 1918.


PTE. J. CUNNINGHAM, R.S.
Joseph Cunningham – age 32 – Private (3195533) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Joseph enlisted in the Royal Scots shortly after the war started before transferring to the KOSB. He was killed during the second Chindit Expedition in Burma in 1944.
Born 1912 in Galashiels. Son of Charlotte Cunningham of Galashiels. Husband of Agnes Stenhouse (Watson) Cunningham of 32 Forest Gardens, Galashiels who he married in 1940 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 18 April 1944 and named on the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

Fay Taylor Currie – age 23 – Aircraftwoman 2nd Class (2043380) Women's Auxiliary Air Force.
Fay, of 3 Stirling Street, Galashiels, was a shop manageress when she joined the RAF in 1941. She died of tubercular meningitis in the Emergency Hospital in Bridge of Earn, Perthshire.
Born 1920 in Morningside, Edinburgh as Fay Currie Taylor.
Daughter of Euphemia Duncan Taylor of 37 Ivy Terrace, Edinburgh. Adopted daughter of Thomas and Annie (Bain) Currie of 3 Stirling Street, Galashiels.
Died on Service on 26 May 1944 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)


PTE. T. CURRIE, D.L.I.
Thomas Currie – age 23 – Private (3190602) 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.
The 9th DLI landed at Gold Beach, Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944. Thomas was killed near the village of Lingevres west of Caen and was re-interred at Bayeux in July 1945.
Born c.1921 but I cannot trace. Son of Thomasina Jessie B. (Currie) Finlay of Galashiels. Thomasina was born in 1900 in Pringleton Village, Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. She married Thomas Finlay in 1934 in Galashiels. Grandson of the late John and Henrietta Currie, formerly of Ladyrig, Kelso.
Killed in Action on 21 July 1944 and buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France.


TPR. H. DARLING, R.T.R.
Hugh Darling – age 29 – Trooper (3195537) 5th Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps.
Hugh was employed in the Galabank Mill in Galashiels when he enlisted in 1940.
Born 1912 in Galashiels. Son of Robert and Janet Darling of 23 Kirkbrae, Galashiels. Husband of Jane Keiller (Gillies) Darling of 3 Kirkbrae, Galashiels who he married in 1935 in Buckhaven, Fife.
Died of Wounds on 17 July 1942 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.

SGT. W. Y. DARRIE, K.O.S.B.
Walter Young Darrie – age 34 – Sergeant (3185154) 8th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Walter had joined the Army in 1928 and had spent seven years in India before the war. He and his brother James were with the 1st King' Own Scottish Borderers in France in 1940 and were lifted from the beaches of Dunkirk. The 8th A&SH was reformed after the losses in France in 1940 and fought in Tunisia before taking part in the invasion of Sicily in July 1943.
Born 1910 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of the late George Darrie (died 1926) and of Ellen (Young) Darrie.
Helen Darrie married Robert Dunn Thomson in 1932 in Edinburgh and they lived at 330 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Husband of Vera Doreen (Wake) Darrie of Southsea, Hampshire who he married in 1939 in Portsmouth.
Killed in Action on 1 August 1943 and buried in Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.


L.SGT. W. DAVIDSON, K.O.S.B.
William Davidson – age 28 – Corporal (3194798) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
The 1st KOSB landed at “Queen” beach in Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944. William was killed at Sannerville near Caen and was re-interred at Ranville in August 1945.
Born 1915 in Galashiels. Son of the late George Davidson (died 1918) and of Amelia Monteith Adam (Rintoul) Davidson of Galashiels. Husband of Margaret McDonald (Reavely) Davidson of Galashiels who he married in 1942 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 19 July 1944. and buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
His father George Davidson, Private (200859) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers was killed in Action on 22 October 1918.


SGT. H. DENTON, R.M.COM.
Harry Denton – age 25 – Sergeant (PO/X2389) 46 Commando, Royal Marines.
46 Commando was formed in August 1943 and landed at Normandy on 7 June 1944, serving on the Orne River bridgehead alongside the British 6th Airborne Division. Harry was killed at Roux and was re-interred in Ranville in October 1945.
Born 1919 in Fylde, Lancashire as Harry. Son of Harry (Petty Officer RN) and Ada (Langley) Denton of Highfield Avenue, Fareham, Hampshire. Husband of Mary Agnes (White) Denton who he married in 1942 in Galashiels as Marine Harry Roy Denton.
Their children Frances Mary and Harry Roy Denton were born in 1943 and 1944 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 22 August 1944 and buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

PTE. W. DICKSON, LONDON SCOT.
Walter Dickson – age 33 – Private (1630480) 1st Battalion, London Scottish (Gordon Highlanders).
Born 1911 in Galashiels. Son of Adam and Margaret (Kerr) Dickson, of Galashiels. Husband of Agnes (Weatherhead) Dickson of Stirling Street, Galashiels who he married in 1934 in Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 7 April 1945 and buried in Argenta Gap War Cemetery, Italy.


PTE. A. H. DOBSON, SEAFORTH HGHRS.
Andrew Hogarth Dobson – age 22 – Private (3190247) 5th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders.
The battalion as part of the 51st Highland Division had crossed the Rhine in late March 1945. Andrew was killed at Hoykenkamp, west of Bremen and was re-interred at Becklingen in August 1946.
Born 1923 in Galashiels. Son of John and Jessie Patterson (Hogarth) Dobson of Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 23 April 1945 and buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.


SGT. T. T. DOBSON, R.A.F.V.R.
Thomas Trotter Dobson – age 21 – Sergeant/Pilot (1568802) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Thomas was killed whilst flying a Martin Baltimore light bomber of 75 Operational Training Unit, based at Gianaclis near Alexandria in Egypt. The aircraft spun into the ground near Damanhur.
Born 1923 in Galashiels. Son of James William and Mary Jane (Bain) Dobson of 36 Larchbank Street, Galashiels,
Died on Service on 19 January 1945 and buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

W.ENG. F. DOCHERTY, R.N.
Francis Docherty – age 33 – Warrant Engineer, H.M.S. Bramble, Royal Navy.
Francis was educated at Chatham Technical School in Kent and joined the navy as a boy artificer in 1924. The minesweeper “Bramble” was sunk by the German destroyer “Friedrich Eckoldt” in the Barents Sea while escorting a convoy to Russia.
Born 1909 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Friel) Docherty of 56 Maidstone Road, Chatham. Husband of Rita Aphra (Maggs) Docherty of Chichester, Sussex who he married in 1939 in Portsmouth. Grandson of the late Daniel Friel of Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Missing in Action/Lost at Sea on 31 December 1942 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.

Born 1906 in Galashiels. Son of Thomas and Agnes (Friel) Docherty of 56 Maidstone Road, Chatham, Kent. Husband of Ivy (Mann) Docherty of Sheffield who he married in 1940 in Sheffield.
Died at Sea on 23 February 1941 (Source: SNMW) and named on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt.
Also named on the Our Lady and St Andrew R.C. Church memorial in Galashiels.


PTE. J. G. DODDS, K.O.S.B.
John Gray Dodds – age 27 – Private (3185729) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
1st KOSB embarked for France in 1939. They crossed the Belgian frontier in May 1940 but, outgunned by an enemy of overwhelming numerical superiority, they were ordered to withdraw. Fighting their way to the coast they were evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk on 1 June.
Born 1912 in Galashiels. Son of Janet Lamb Dodds of Galashiels who married John Sweeney in 1919 in Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 1 June 1940 and named on the Dunkirk Memorial, France.
Also named on the Galashiels East Church memorial.

P.O. T. F. DORWARD, R.A.F.
Thomas Fairgrieve Dorward – age 24 – Pilot Officer/Pilot (60525) 25 Squadron, Fighter Command, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
Thomas was educated at Galashiels Academy, at St. Mary's School in Melrose and at Sedbergh School in Yorkshire (now Cumbria) He played rugby for Gala RFC and was a Scottish rugby international, playing as scrum-half in five Tests in 1938/9. He was a director of J. & J.C. Dorward of Waulkrigg Mills in Galashiels and in 1939/40 he travelled for the company in North America. Thomas was commissioned from Leading Aircraftman (970366) in November 1940 and was the pilot of a Bristol Blenheim which had taken off from RAF Wittering in Northamptonshire for a low-level daytime flight but in foggy conditions the aircraft hit a tree and crashed at Cottesmore near Bourne, Lincolnshire.
Born 1916 in Galashiels. Son of Adam Paterson Dorward and of Isabella (Fairgrieve) Dorward of Ardenleigh, Galashiels.
Died on Active Service on 5 March 1941 and buried in Galashiels (Eastlands) Cemetery. (CWG)
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial, on the St.Mary's School memorial, on the Sedburgh School memorial and on the Scottish Rugby Union Roll of Honour.


F.SGT. J. R. DRYDEN, R.A.F.
John Robert Dryden – age 22 – Sergeant (613297) 61 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
John was educated at Galashiels Academy and was a member of the Red Triangle Rugby Club in Galashiels when he joined the RAF in 1938.
He was the flight engineer on his Lancaster bomber which had taken off from RAF Syerston in Nottinghamshire for a raid on Emden. The aircraft crashed near the target area and the crew were buried in Wittmund but were re-interred at Sage in April 1947. John's remains could not be identified and he is named on the RAF Memorial at Runnymede.
Born 1919 in Galashiels. Son of Cameron Anderson Dryden and Agnes Pace (Sinclair) Dryden of 53 Galapark Road, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 23 June 1942 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
Also named on the Galashiels Academy memorial.

CAPT. JOCK DUN, K.O.S.B.
Jock Dun – age 26 – Captain (124462) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Jock was educated at St. Mary's School in Melrose and was a rugby full-back with Gala R.F.C. He was commissioned in March 1940. The 6th KOSB landed on the Normandy beaches on 15 June 1944 and took part in the battles around Caen and the River Odon. Jock was killed near Tourmauville and was re-interred at Banneville in January 1946.
Born 1918 in Caddonfoot, Selkirkshire as John Dun. Son of Captain John Moffat Dun and Mary Grant Kerr (Bryson) Dun of Craigellachie, Galashiels. Husband of Lucille Margery (Jobson) Dun of 63 Island Street, Galashiels who he married in 1940 in Galashiels,
Jock's best man at his wedding was Pilot Officer Thomas Fairgrieve Dorward – (see above)
Killed in Action on 16 July 1944 and buried in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
Also named on the St. Mary's School memorial and on the Galashiels East Church memorial.


F.SGT. WM. EDDINGTON, R.A.F.
William Eddington – age 20 – Sergeant (553011) 196 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force.
William's Wellington bomber had taken off from RAF Leconfield in Yorkshire for a raid on Duisberg but the aircraft was lost without a trace.
Born 1923 in Galashiels. Son of James and Margaret Elliott (Tait) Eddington of 17 Livingston Place, Galashiels.
Missing in Action on 13 May 1943 and named on the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.


PTE. D. ELLIOT, GORDON HGHRS.
Douglas Elliot – age 23 – Private (2889826) 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Douglas had served in North Africa and had been awarded the Africa Star. The 1st Gordons as part of the 51st Highland Division landed at Normandy on D-Day 6 June 1944 and Douglas was killed a month later near Longueval. He was re-interred at Ranville in June 1945.
Born 1921 in Galashiels. Son of Alexander and Janet Todd (Henderson) Elliot of Galashiels and of Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Grandson of the late Alexander Henderson of Scott Street, Galashiels.
Killed in Action on 10 July 1944 and buried in Ranville War Cemetery, Calvados, France.
