I am trying to find out, if family folklore is correct regarding my grandfather John Daly.He was born in Tullysaran,Armagh on 21 August 1880, and came to Old Monkland to work.He married a local girl. The family claim he was in the army and died or did not return from the Dardanelles.I have looked at medal sites, war grave sites, the death records at Scotlands people and cannot find him.The problem is not having dates, army regiment, service number etc.
Is there a way to find out where he enlisted given we have his date of birth and marriage certificate etc.
How can I solve this problem?
All suggestions welcomed. _________________ If peace cannot be maintained with honour,it is no longer peace........Lord John Russell...

There are only two John Daly's who died in Gallipoli
DALY, JOHN
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Royal Irish Regiment
Unit Text: 5th Bn.
Age: 34
Date of Death: 16/08/1915
Service No: 43
Additional information: Son of John Daly, of Newmarket, Knocktopher, Co. Kilkenny.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 55.
Memorial: HELLES MEMORIAL
Name: DALY, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 8th Bn.
Date of Death: 28/06/1915
Service No: 9499
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 92 to 97.
Memorial: HELLES MEMORIAL
The second man died in Gallipoli and served in a Scottish Regiment which primarily recruited in Glasgow and Lanarkshire, that must make him a candidate. Can you rule him out?
Surprisingly you can't find him on the Scottish National War Memorial online database. A search on the SDGW CD might provide more information.
If the story about Gallipoli is family hearsay then what about this man listed on the Scottish National War Memorial online database?
DALY, John
Service Number 9022
Date Death 17/09/1916
Place of birth Londonderry
Other 1st Bn.
SNWM roll SCOTTISH CASUALTIES EXTRACTED FROM ENGLISH REGIMENTS
Rank Pte
Theatre of death F.& F.
Londonderry isn't near Armagh but it wouldn't be the first time the SDGW has got a place of birth wrong.
Here is his CWGC details
DALY, JOHN
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Irish Guards
Unit Text: 1st Bn.
Date of Death: 17/09/1916
Service No: 9022
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 7 D.
Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL
Given he was born in Ireland and served in an Irish regiment I'm surprised he is listed on the SNWM database. He must have some sort of Scottish connection.
Again a SDGW search may provide more information.
Regards

I have found out that this John was definitely on the birth records as Armagh. His parents were Luke Daly and Mary Lappin of Tullysaran,Armagh. Some christenings took place at Clonfeacle but that may have been the mothers connections.
I was thinking the one you spotted with the Cameronians may have been a possible but see that another kind person posted that he was born in Barony,Glasgow.
I will study these and see if anything else strikes me.Thanks all. _________________ If peace cannot be maintained with honour,it is no longer peace........Lord John Russell...
