There is another individual memorial to this man in St Ninian’s Episcopal church in Castle Douglas posted here

As stated on the plaque for this memorial, Alexander’s grandfather laid the foundation stone of the church and his name is inscribed on it. The memorial cross is also gifted in memory of another member of the family.

This window is by Dr Douglas Strachan who also did the windows in the Scottish National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle. This window depicts Our Lord on the cross with his mother and John on his right, and the Roman centurian and soldiers on his left. The women of Jerusalem weep at his feet. Note the artist’s portrayal of the head of Christ held high as he offered his life back to God, his work completed (description from a leaflet available in the church).

Amazing how we keep turning up these magnificent but unlisted memorials!

To a K.O.S.B. OFFICER

In commemoration of Captain Alexander Dobree Young-Herries , King's Own Scottish Borderers , only son of. Colonel W. D. Young-Herries of Spottes, Dalbeattie and who was killed in action in the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, a beautiful memorial window testing a representation of the Crucifixion has been unveiled in Urr Parish Church. The service was taken part in by Very Rev, Professor .W. P. Paterson, D.D., Edinburgh. Rev. J. Kirkland Cameron, Auchterhouse, former chaplain to The King’s Own Scottish Borderers; and Rev. Dr, Frew, minister of the church. The unveiling ceremony was performed by Lt.-Col. Sir Joseph Fayrer Bart.. C.B.B., M.D. F.R.C.S.Ed, Superintendent of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, and brother-in-law, of Colonel Herries. There was a large congregation. The window was gifted by Colonel Herries and is placed in the chancel of the church.
