Useful site for looking up U Boat operations including ships they sunk - you can search by date or name of target ship as well. Also looks like they have a good links section. Handy if you are researching Navy or Merchant Marine deaths.

The last one of course ! I've written several articles on it concerning WW I German U-boats operating from Flanders area. |

Can I thank you guys for your work here? These links will, I hope, help me to find out more about my grandfather who was reported lost in the Atlantic on 4th April 1941.
I've already started reading on both sites and they are very informative, so thanks again.
Liz
Edit: 5 very interesting hours later! How sad is that? Nothing else to do an a Saturday night ... Followed the links to both sites and think I've now narrowed down both the convoy my grandfather was part of(HG-53) and the U-boat (U-37) that fired the torpedo (Based on the date the family was notified of his loss at sea). I'll carry on with my research to verify details. Thanks again. |

Quick update:
The guys on the u-boat site are very helpful and have directed me to more information about U-37 and convoy HG53. Nice to know that there are helpful people around.
I bought a book last week (The Real Cruel Sea by Richard Woodman - it's about the Merchant Navy and the battle of the Atlantic 1939-45). While providing lots of details about the Battle of the Atlantic, it is immensely readable and brings into focus how difficult life was for the men in the merchant marine, and how close Britain and her allies came to losing).
Thanks again for the help here.

My father was Royal Navy for the duration - a stoker on frigates on convoy duties. Although he never spoke much of the war, I got the impression that to be on a convoy was cold, wet, uncomfortable, boring and with all the dangers of the sea and the ever present threat of u-boats - a bit like a nagging toothache. Punctuated of course by moments of terror when they thought there was a u-boat nearby. If you get the chance to visit HMS Alliance in the submarine museum at Portsmouth, it gives some reasonable impression of what it must have been like on a submarine.
