Looking at the cover, you would be forgiven for thinking that this memorial lacked promise – but when you open it up – what treasure. Each page is beutifully written on vellum and I would love to know how they did the excellent badges at the head of each page. Works of art!
The memorial contains a page on each of the five WW2 dead (the same 5 as listed on the Balmaclellan civic memorial) then a full page on each of those who served. Finally, there is an index page.
Many more photos than is usual for this memorial, I am posting those who died here and will make future posts with those who served – this will have to be over at least two posts I am afraid because my camera ran out of memory so I will have to go back to complete the job and the church is only open for service on the first Sunday of each month.
This memorial richly deserves to be re-bound and put in a protective case.

Superb.
My concern is that the original book is starting to look damp and grubby and won't last for another 50 years.

It's not damp but it's certainly grubby (paint or plaster I think) and getting a little battered. The pages are immaculate however, and I just cannot describe how crisp the vellum feels and how sharp and detailed are the badges and the writing. It could easily be rebound but should really be in a case. |
