A plan of the memorial and the old barracks that stood on the site before the memorial was built. This and the other images I posted yesterday are from a Country Life suplement I have photographed. I will post more of it when I get a chance to edit and download the photos.

This is the front page from a Sunday Post supplement of 1928 and another showing some of the animals carvings. Note the Regimental Colours in the Sunday Post supplement of the view of the Hall of Honour looking West. This dates the photo to after the opening ceremony. Corinne's image of the postcard showing the same view does not show the Colours and must be official shots taken before the opening ceremony. The Country Life supplement also shows the Colours.

Here are two photos of the Women's memorials from the Country Life supplement. Corinne has already posted the postcard versions of these memorials. They are very similar but then I suppose they would be. They aren't the same original photographs though

I take it Corinne's images are from a set of official photos used by the SNWM on it's postcards which were sold in the 1920s and '30s for revenue. You'll find a least one of these images in any box of old postcards in any bric-a-brac shop (sorry antique dealers) worth its salt these days. The ones I'm posting were taken at a slightly later date and used by the newspapers and magazines. I wonder if the SNWM supplied them or if the newspapers were allowed to take their own?

I take it the SNWM periodically takes new images of the Hall and memorials for the postcards it sells at the Memorial.

Here over the next few posts is the text from the Country Life supplement. It's not to my taste but it is 80 years old. The first half of the supplement is Sir Lawrence Weaver's text and the second half is the photographs.

I've dug out my 1931 copy of Ian Hay's book about the SNWM Their Name Liveth. Hay uses the same images as the Country Life Supplement and credits the copyright to Francis Caird Inglis, 'Photgrapher to His majesty the King at Edinburgh'.
F.C, Inglis died in 1940 so if I'm correct the copyright for these images expired in 1990. That mean it's OK to post them here.

Here are some photos of the Shrine which holds the casket with the names.

I've never noticed these carvings of the planets before. You can see them in the background of the photo of St Michael above. I've always been too busy looking at the bronze frieze.

Some shots of the windows which in no way can do them any sort of justice. I'm afraid the online tour on the Official SNWM website doesn't show them in great detail either.

"Remember also the Humble Beasts that served and died".

These carvings sum up the amount of thought which went into this magnificent memorial. No person, or animal, which served in the war was overlooked. Each one had played their part in the victory and deserved an honoured place here.

You can see the horse, dog and camel carvings on an earlier post from a different supplement.

All these carvings are at the top of pillars within the hall. The next one is at the base of a pillar for obvious reasons.

This is probably the best place for the next image as well. This carving is above the main doorway. The Pelican of the Wilderness is symbolic. Suposedly in times of hardship a mother pelican will feed her young with her own blood by piercing her chest with her beak.

Here are some shots of the Hall of Honour. Note the Battle Honours incribed along the top of the walls. A detail easy to miss when you are actually in the memorial.
