I came across this report while browsing through 1944 editions of the Wigtownshire Free Press. Two women from the Timber Corps killed in an accident. Probably not named on a memorial enywhere (unless someone knows better):
Wigtownshire Free Press (20/7/1944): Two members of the Women's Timber Corps were killed and two were injured in an accident in the Penpont district of Dumfriesshire at the weekend. All four girls were travelling to work on a timber wagon pulled by a tractor when they fell off and were caught in the wheels of the wagon. The dead were Jean Forsyth, 15 Stenhouse Avenue West, Edinburgh, and Annie McKay, 28 Fraser Street, Glasgow. The two injured girls who were taken to Dumfries Infirmary are Patricia Dawson, 58 Langford Street, Glasgow, and Mary Murray, 7 Syriam Street, Glasgow. |

Mike - the incident is also reported in the D&G Standard 19/7/1944 p.4
It occurred on the Burnhead-Keir-Penpont road near Beuchan Farm. "About a quarter to eight a large number of girls were proceeding to work, some of them sitting on a pole wagon pulled by a tractor".
The two who were killed are reported as Jane F.C. Forsyth of Edinburgh and Annie M'Kay of Glasgow. They are both recorded on the Keir Parish register but Annie is shown as Annie E McKay Ward, age 19.
Jane Fair C. Forsyth was 20. _________________ Ken |
