Anne - There's an item about the Sherriff Family of Carronvale at
http://memento-mori-scotland.blogspot.co.uk/2011_09_01_archive.html
which includes this:
During the First World War, the Officers of the 8th Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) were billeted in the stables of the Carronvale Estate. Carronvale House.
So it would seem they were in the area prior to shipping out to Gallipoli in May 1915, where Lt. Col. Hannan was killed.

This book would explain all:
http://www.naval-military-press.com/pdf/1843427400.pdf
One of the photos (not shown) is of the 8th Cameronians at Falkirk.
Maybe the library will have a copy???

David - can you have a look in the book and see if there's anything mentioned about the plaque being made/erected/whatever please?

Had a brief look in the opening chapter which covers their time in the UK before embarking for Gallipoli, the plaque is not mentioned.
