In today's "Berwickshire News" is an article announcing Borders council is 1 of 7 authorities to share a £100k pot from the government's PLQIM fund
intended to commemorate WWI. Our share is to be used to digitise 3 local papers: Berwickshire Advertiser, Southern Reporter, Kelso Chroncile.
Won't be of direct use for memorial unveilings as it will presumably end in 1918 or 1919, but it should still be a very useful resource for finding more information about individuals.

A welcome development.
But also annoying that the National Library of Scotland don't have the Southern available online.

Project must have been completed as I helped the Museums Service mount a WWI exhibition in Duns Library during the autumn, and they had made-up laminated information sheets with articles taken from the papers. I've never seen anything in the library or the local press about public access.
However, the BNA must have been digitising the Berwickshire News and the Southern Reporter anyway... unless the projects were somehow connected... as they have recently made both those papers plus the Hawick News available, although nothing from the Kelso Chronicle. Seems a bit of waste, if two sets of people were doing the same thing, but maybe there was some coordination.
Anyway the BNA has recently expanded to provide good Borders newspaper coverage, namely:
Berwickshire News - weekly 1901 > 1955
(plus 12 years worth from 1870s to 1890s)
Southern Reporter - weekly 1858 > 1945 (except 1931)
Hawick News - weekly 1904 and 1909 > 1944 (except 1911, 1925 & 1937)
Hopefully the gaps will soon be filled-in too.
As you would expect the OCR/search is often pretty poor, but overall a great resource. |

After a period of being available in libraries on portable hard-drives this has now gone live on the main SBC Libraries computer system itself, although it can't be accessed at home unfortunately... Having read the system guide in my local library, it seems they've been indexed in some form.

BNA remains convenient way to consult Southern Reporter, Hawick News or Berwickshire News but this makes the Kelso Chronicle, Peeblesshire Advertiser and Berwickshire Advertiser available. |
