And from the same website

The SS Stockport disappeared in the North Atlantic on 24th February 1943, most probably sunk by a German submarine. On board were the 64 man crew named on this memorial, and an unknown number of "survivors" pulled from the sea by the Stockport after their own ships had been torpedoed.
In peacetime the Stockport had been a passenger-cargo steamer. Her home port was Grimsby. She plied the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) company's routes across the North Sea to Holland.

Her wartime role was as hospital rescue ship escorting convoys across the Atlantic Ocean. She survived several convoys in which many ships were sunk, rescuing over 400 of their crew. At 1,600 tons, and with a top speed on a good day of only 13 knots, the 30 year old ship was not best suited to the North Atlantic in mid winter.

On convoy duty, when the explosion of a torpedo announced the presence of U-boats, other ships left the vicinity as swiftly as possible, but the Stockport's lonely task was to steam towards the site of the explosion and search for survivors. Without the protection of a convoy, the Stockport was an easy target. Her crew regularly risked own lives to save others.

Several ships were sunk as convoy ON-166 made its way across the ocean. Each time the Stockport stopped to rescue survivors she lagged further behind. No one knows the exact details of her last moments.

This memorial to the SS Stockport is located in the town of the same name. I was curious to know if there was any other connection between the town and ship, and checked to see if any of the crew came from Stockport. None did. The nearest was from Stretford, five miles away. Two were from Cheshire, but most of the crew were of Scottish origin.

From U-Boat net here are the details of the sinking:

http://www.uboat.net/allies/merchants/2676.html

It makes grim reading, she sunk within three minutes of being torpedoed. The pervious post said there were countless unknown survivors of other sinkings on the 'Stockport' when she was sunk but this website records that they had already been transferred to a Canadian Naval ship.

Stockport
Type: Steam merchant
Tonnage 1.683 tons
Completed 1911 - Earle´s Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Hull
Owner: London & North Eastern Railway Co, London
Homeport: Grimsby
Date of attack: 23 Feb, 1943
Nationality: British

Fate
Sunk by U-604 (Horst Höltring)
Position: 47.22N, 34.10W - Grid BD 4633
Complement: 64 (64 dead - no survivors)
Convoy: ON-166 (straggler)
Route: Greenock (8 Feb) - Clyde (11 Feb) - St. Johns
Cargo: None (Rescue ship)
History: On 22 Oct, 1941, the Stockport became operational as rescue ship, took part in 16 convoys and picked up 413 survivors altogether.

Notes on loss
At 03.12 hours on 23 Feb, 1943, U-604 fired a spread of four torpedoes at the Stockport (Master Thomas Ernest Fea OBE) and scored two hits that caused the ship to sink within three minutes east of Cape Race. The rescue ship fell behind the convoy ON-166 when picking up the survivors from 'Empire Trader' on 22 February. After transferring the men to HMCS 'Dauphin' (K 157), she tried to rejoin the convoy but was torpedoed and lost with all hands.

The U-604 was scuttled on 11 Aug, 1943 in the South Atlantic after being bombed by American aircraft.
