While researching Capt. John Sproat RA 26/1/1944 - I ran across a letter from Vincent van Dijk (no honest see http://www.rhf.org.uk/Archives/490/490.html ) about the relocation of the National Bank of Scotland (WW1 & WW2) and the Commercial Bank of Scotland (WW2) memorials to the new RBS Group HQ in Gogarburn (in 2006) These memorials had been in 42 St. Andrew's Square.
Do we have these on the Project??????

Ken

We don't have them. The Commercial Bank one had been in the old RBS building which is now the Dome and had been the Commercial Bank Head Office. The National Bank memorials had been in 42 St Andrew Square, now an empty building rumoured at one time to be an hotel or Lithuanian bank.

When RBS built Gogarburn 42 St Andrew Square was sold and the three memorials are now placed in the main entrance of the main building.

The Royal Bank of Scotland and the Commercial Bank Great War memorial plaques are in 36 St Andrew Square, the old head office of the Royal Bank.

There is info on the few memorials at Gogarburn here http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=367 and also on the far greater number of memorials at the archive in South Gyle.

I have not found time to visit Gogarburn but I visited South Gyle by arrangement about five (?) years ago. I was shown the secure conditions on which they are stored but was not allowed to photograph them, nor even take a camera into the building. Furthermore they are stacked in such a way as most can only be seen edge on.

The view of the archivist was that, as all of the information about these memorials is online (Canmore, UKNIWM and RBS's own site) then there was probably no urgent need to add these to our site. Photography is not permitted in the bank's archives for security reasons.

Rather than wear out my welcome, I thanked them for access, knowing that the memorials were safe and would still be there in years to come when someone else might try again.
