Not listed on UKNIWM

Location inside Canongate Church, Edinburgh at OS Map Ref NT 264 738.

This memorial was unveiled by the Queen on 2nd July 1989.

Sqn Ldr Gifford DFC shot down the first German aircraft over British Soil. Full story is at http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=1933

F/O C W Goldsmith, Spitfire IIa P7439 was on patrol when shot down by ME109 of JG51 south of Maidstone at 1405 and died the next day. He is buried at Hornchurch, age 23.

F/O R McG Waterston, Spitfire I X4273K shot down by ME109 of JG3 over London 1830, age 23.

P/O W P H Rafter, Spitfire IIa P7449, plane dived into the ground south of Broomfield, cause not known. He had previously been wounded and his spitfire written off in combat with an ME109 on 5th September. He was aged just 19 when he died.

Sgt A S Darling, Spitfire IIa P7615 - Shipping Recce, shot down and killed by ME109 of II/JG51 on 26 Apr 1941. He was previously shot down on 13th March in Spitfire IIa P7368 whilst on op Circus. On that occasion he crash landed at Dungeness after combat with JG51.

Jack Dawson Green served with 603 Sqn and was killed on 17 March 1945 but is not listed on this memorial.
