Surgeon General Birrell is given pride of place on the Penicuick War Memorial.

He was 59 at his death in 1918 and had seen a lot of campaigning in his time. Gallipoli is briefly mentioned in his CWGC entry. In 1915 He was actually the former Director of Medical Services, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force.
