Still working on the Plean memorial, with only a handful left to find. However, it's getting harder to find info.
For the above soldier, I found a reference to a James Hughes, miner at East Plean Colliery who joined the Gordons. Out of all the men of that name, only two were in the Gordons, so now I have to choose between
Private no. S/5205 born Dreghorn but enlisted Stirling
or
Lance Corporal no. S/10324 born and enlisted Glasgow
I would tend towards the one who enlisted in Stirling, but has anybody an idea how to find proof positive that it's him?

The service record for S/10324 has survived.

Address on enlistment is 27 Oswald Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow. Occupation is given as "Labourer". Married Mary Lowrie in 1912, had two children. One born in 1913 but I can't make out the name, one called James born in 1915.

It's a confusing record, on one page it says he enlisted in Aberdeen on 24th May 1915, on another it says he enlisted in Glasgow.

It seems his widow was first notified that he had been killed in action, there is a note to her that advises he actually died from wounds on 3rd July 1917.

Is any of that of use to you in narrowing it down to one of them?

Thanks David, that would tend to confirm that it's the other one I'm after - if he's working in Plean pit, why enlist in Aberdeen...? but I would like to be sure and there's the problem!

Problem solved!
The one on the Plean memorial is Private S/5205 born 2/2/1892 in Kirkland Road Dreghorn, son of Francis Hughes(miner) and Agnes Wilson. The family were living in Red Row Plean in 1911. His will names his sister, also of Plean.
Thanks to all who helped.

No Ken - only 6! These are the missing ones:
WW2: David Thom - he may be the one from Larbert but I would like to prove it!
WW1 : Robert Aitken, Alex Martin, James Menzies, Charles McGregor, the second James McIntyre...
