My name is Evelyn and for the last few years I have been researching the men on the war memorials at Kirkurd and Newands. I don't have any family connection with any of the men I just wanted to find out a bit about each one so when their names were read out at the Remembrance Services I knew who they were, where they lived, what they looked like. I also passed the information on to the local primary school. |

Welcome to the forum and some great memorials to start with.
Do you know anything about Janet Brown the munitions worker from Kirkurd who died?
Kind regards
Adam |

I know very little about Janet Brown In 1911 she was 11 years old living at Old Harestanes (near Blyth Bridge) with her parents, John and Annie, and younger siblings, Thomas Agnes and John. I understand that there is a memorial at York Minster for all munitions workers who died during the Great War and I have tried to contact them regarding this but, so far, without success. Just noticed that you share the same surname - are you a relative (she asks hopefully!) |

Sorry to tell you that Janet Brown is not named on the list of Munitions workers on the Women's Memorial in York Minster. _________________ Ken |

I have just come across a newspaper article reporting the dedication of a memorial organ in Kirkurd UF Church in 1919 and it mentions that Janet Brown "one of our girls" died at munitions work in London. |
