Ive today received an addendum for the book "PIPERS OF THE HIGHLAND REGIMENTS 1854-1902 " by Richard H Crawford (2009) and on page 206 he wishes to add :
RIDDLE JAMES 6011 : BORN at Fyvie in 1877 wed January 1917 Lizzie Riddle , 4 Castle St Glasgow : EMPLOYED as GLASGOW POLICE CONSTABLE . recalled August 1914 to 6th Gordon Hdrs
Killed in action 9th April 1917 ; buried Roclincourt Military Cemetery Plt 1/Row A/Grave 27
add to medal entitlement British War and Victory medals
I cant see Police Constable James RIDDLE 6th Gordon Highlanders listed on the Glasgow City Police war memorials of the Glasgow City Police museum . Any ideas or have I missed his name ??

Thanks Anne , thought that you might be able to help and wonder why hes not listed on the GLASGOW CITY POLICE war memorial held by the Glasgow City Police Museum (curator ex Insp Alastair Dinsmor ) .
Have I missed his name or has he been missed off for some unknown reason as I would expect he was still serving in the City Police when recalled for the Gordon Hdrs ??
thanks

I see that PTE 266902 RIDDELL is listed with this spelling on the SNWM and on the CWGC index
I will have a check now on the Glasgow City Police war memorials to see if he is listed under this spelling

Thanks Anne for all these researches . I don't see James Riddell or James Riddle listed on the Glasgow City Police memorials but will contact Alastair Dinsmor at their Museum as I used to work with him in the Strathclyde Police days of the 1970s before I moved elsewhere to police !
thanks

Pat,
If you wish I will check with the Police Resignation Register held in the Mitchell Library.
This book gives the service record of all policemen who served in the City of Glasgow Police.

Pat
The following is an extract from the City of Glasgow Police Records which are held in the Mitchell Library Archives.
JAMES RIDDEL, former occupation 2nd Gordon Highlanders, age 26, height 5' 10", DOB 6th Aug 1878, Millbrex, Aberdeenshire, Single.
He joined the force in 1904 and was dismissed from the force on the 19th June 1908, cause given WoL (Worse of Liquor).
Only "serving" members of the Police Force who were KIA or Died during 1914-1921 were commemorated on the War Memorial.
"Serving" - Those who were called up or volunteered to join the armed forces had to resign from the force in the first instance.
