J Wood McLaren, Cameron Highlanders is listed in "Hawick & The War" as being "Missing" sometime between 1917 and 1918.

His name does not appear on the Hawick Roll of Honour.
There is however a John McLaren, Royal Scots Fusiliers, listed on the Galashiels War Memorial. He was ex.201357 KOSB which is 1/4th Bn. So I do not believe that he is the same as J Wood McLaren.

I'm now thinking that my J Wood McLaren may have survived the war. I've checked the 1911 census but have failed to find John or his family.

Can anyone help?

Derek - The best I can offer is a James MacLaren at 6 Dovemount Place on the 1920 Valuation Roll.

Ken,

Thanks for that.
It's a lead I will chase up. Cheers.

Derek

I believe J Wood McLaren may have been John McLaren, son of Alexander McLaren and his wife Elizabeth m.s. Wood. He married Jane Carlyle at The Manse Hawick, on 14 July 1911.

A daughter Jane was born on 3 July 1912 in Hawick and a son, possibly John Carlyle McLaren, was born in 1915. Jane McLaren died in 1954 in Hawick and her husband John was still living at that date.

Coincidence or circumstantial evidence?

Now that we know we are definitely looking for a John McLaren, a search of MICs returns five possibles (when excluding middle initials) who served with the Cameron Highlanders. However, based on him being a PoW and so not likely to have served with a subsequent unit, only two remain: Private S/16570 died in Oct 1918, leaving Private S/17419, originally a 5th Bn man.

I searched the casualty lists to try and find him listed as missing during 1916-17 (published 1918 lists were restricted to those who died in service), but with no success. Checking his MIC I noted that he went to France on 11 Aug 1915, so thought it worth a check for wounded lists for Loos. Guess what? One return for S/17419 5th Cameron Highlanders published in The Scotsman 27 Oct 1915 - but under Wood, S/17419, J.

Based on my experiences of these casualty lists, I suggest that it is quite likely that a clerical slip has substituted a middle name for surname. Perhaps it will be worth checking the local newspapers for Oct/Nov 1915 for a mention of him being wounded, which would add to the likelihood that he was Private S/17419.

Cheers,

Stuart

Derek / Stuart

Another snippet from Scotlands People : A John McLaren is recorded in the Valuation Rolls of 1915. The address, I think, is 10 Loan, Hawick and his occupation is recorded as soldier.
