Forum members may be interested in one of the events at this year's Wigtown Book Festival. On Weds 2 October (1.30 pm) Emily Mayhew will present "Wounded: From Battlefield to Blighty, 1914-1918". A consultant to the Imperial War Museam and examiner at the Imperial College of Medicine, Emily Mayhew talks about the first comprehensive account of medical care at the Western Front. Using the testimony of stretcher bearers, chaplains, doctors and nurses, she traces the journey of casualties from the battlefield to hospital at home, paying homage to the courageous men and women who saved so many lives. It will be held at the Main Hall of the County Buildings; cost £6.

Anyone with an interest in the period, albeit not directly related to WW1 may be interested in "Russian Roulette", a presentation on the eccentric band of British spies who sneaked into the newly created Soviet Union in 1917. Also "!913: The World Before the Great War". Both are also part of the Book Week.

Just back from this and a fascinating talk it was, too. About the unsung heroes of WW1 i.e. the stretcher bearers, medics, nurses and padres. Apparently the source material is very scarce as the authorities had most material relating to the medical treatment destroyed in the 1920s. Any testimonies/diaries/letters from or about stretcher bearers, nurses, padres etc would be welcomed by folk like Emily as part of their research. It was a moving, yet inspiring, talk. She will be doing a talk on Remembrance Day in Edinburgh apparently - but I didn't take down the details.

Thanks for the update Mike. I will try and find the details of the Edinburgh talk and post them.

Thanks

At a tangent to the subject, I wrote a guest blog on the Fighting Ministers of South West Scotland http://scottishmilitary.blogspot.co.uk/2011/05/fighting-ministers-of-south-west.html

Perhaps Emily would find this an interesting read?

Paul,

Sorry not to reply sooner - I was south of the border researching one of my ancestors who lived in Sheffield. I'm sure Emily would be interested in the blog and will try and make contact, probably via the Booktown website.

By the by, I was in Sheffield library and got distracted by their WW1 Roll of Honour book and various local histories of the time. I noted down for Stuart the KOSB me who were Sheffielders and died in WW1. If anyone wants names of men from other Scottish Regiments I'd be pleased to jot them down on one of my regular visits.

Mike

There was a double page review of the book in Saturday's (19 October) Scottish Daily Mail.
