Can anyone tell me more about this young lad from Dundee who was killed in a flying accident near Pudsey, Yorkshire?
Sergeant/Flight Engineer (1574423) Alfred Keith Moncur was just 17 when he died on 20 July 1944. He is buried in Dundee Eastern Necropolis.
He was born in 1926 in St. Clement, Dundee, the son of the late Alexander John Moncur [died 1937] and of Francis Mary Moncur of 131 Kingsway, Dundee.
He joined the RAF, aged 16, from the 1230 Squadron, Air Training Corps (Morgan Academy) and had been serving for 18 months. (Dundee Courier 22/7/1944 p.2)
He was on board a Stirling bomber of 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit which had taken off from RAF Winthorpe near Newark, Nottinghamshire on a training flight. The aircraft had engine problems and crashed near Pudsey. Alfred was killed when his parachute failed to open.
He is named on the Dundee Roll of Honour but I don't see him on the Morgan Academy memorial. _________________ Ken |
