In the latest issue of History Scotland there is a short article about the loss of Scottish military lives 1922-39. It reads:" East Kilbride History Society, in association with S Lanarkshire Council Bereavement Services, is seeking to identify individual men and women who died in armed service between 1922 and 1939 and who, at the time, also resided in Glasgow and Lanarkshire, in order that their name can be added to local memorials. These will have been women and men and served in Scottish regiments or other army regiments and corps, as well as the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Fleet Auxilliary, Royal Navy Reserve, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, Royal Marine Reserve, RAF Reserve, RAF Volunteer Reserve and Military Nursing Sevices, QARANC, QARNN, RAF Nursing Sevices, TA Civilians in military employment and NAAFI, whether the demise was in the UK or overseas. Details of any such personnel should be sent to D Maxwell at S Lanarkshire Council Bereavement Services on 0303 123 1016 or e-mail: bereavement.services@southlanarkshire.gov.uk." |

Maybe it's because I'm a bit hot and sticky (and grumpy) but isn't it a contradiction to add inter-war year deaths to War Memorials?
I know that folks who died after the World Wars have been added but they were usually deaths as the result of service or during specific conflicts (Korea, Malaya, Iraq etc, etc)
This proposal seems to be much more general - and which Glasgow War Memorials do they have in mind? _________________ Ken |

I know what you mean, Ken. I do wonder what has motivated the Local Authority to do this ( I don't plan to go through their meeting minute to find out). I've had a quick search on the interweb thingy about conflicts Britain has been involved in between the wars and come up with: The Adwan Rebellion (1923); the Ikhwan Revolt (1927-30); the Great Arab Revolt in Palestine (1936-1939); the Jewish Insurgency in Mandatory Palestine (1939 to 1948); S-Plan (Jan 1939 to March 1940) [something to do with the IRA apparently].
At least this has expanded my knowledge of 20th Century history. |
