I did my best to check that this was not already posted and could not find it. If it is already posted and I missed it, please let me know.
This is one of a number of Royal Scots memorials in St Giles Cathedral that are listed on UKNIWM. Unfortunately, most have only a reference number and no other information. Therefore it is not possible to tie any particular memorial to the UKNIWM reference number from the information currently available but it must be one of:
8797, 9798, 9799, 8800, 8801, 8802, 8803, 8804, 8805 or 8806.
OS Map Ref: NT 270 730

Spoons
Good photos of this memorial.
The series you list of UKNIWM entries for St Giles are a waste of space. They have probably been duplicated by later entries anyway. Some of the other St Giles ones on the database are confusing because the title is a regiment but the memorial is in fact to an individual officer.
There needs to be some work done by the UKNIWM team to tidy it up for St Giles.

Just doing some cross checking and I noticed that the following man isn't listed on this Memorial.
I would have thought as he came from the Gibson-Craigs of the Riccarton Estate, he'd have been listed?
ROBERT JAMES GIBSON-CRAIG, 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Scots
Born 5th June? 1882 died at Naauwpoori? South Africa, 23rd April 1900
Second and eldest surviving son of Sir James H. Gibson-Craig, 3rd Baronet

How can I find out more information on individuals listed on the St. Giles monument? The last Lance Corporal "A. Williamson" may be a relative. I have a relative Adam Williamson KIA in the war but have been unable to confirm. I've looked on several lists including Asplin's and found several potentials but no confirming documentatin. I could confirm it by knowing the record showed he came from Armadale, West Lothian.
Thanks for any direction. |

Sorry I don't know any resources to research the Boer war. Perhaps the Royal Scots Museum in Edinburgh Castle could help?

Thanks, Spoons. I received a email back from the Royal Scots, who I assume my relative served with. They said they have records but need 30 pounds to go look. |

WMR 8800 has been used for this memorial.
The various other WMR numbers have been deleted.
About 25 to 30 years ago there was a plan of the memorials in St Giles, issued by the Kirk, and those records related to that plan, so it was known what they related to.
Unfortunately that plan no longer seems to exist, so we are in the dark now what they meant. |
