Recently I heard that a new publication (June 2012) had been made by the Lanarkshire Family History Society and the book on Strathaven & Avondale fallen for the 1914-1918 war is priced at £12.50 + P & P (£1.60)

The book covers the unveiling and dedication of the Strathaven war memorial and also lists the casualties and covers too the Church and School memorials .
Addit : Men & Women of Strathaven who SERVED IN THE 1914-18 WAR are listed on Pages 74- 86 including their regiments , corps etc
"A donation will be made for every book sold to Erskine Hospital -caring for veterans since 1916 "

I've got a copy. It's OK, but like many it relies too much on CWGC and SDGW information. And like most, it only really covers those who were killed.
Why does no-one even attempt to compile data on those who returned home? |

I am finding the information in this publication by the Lanarkshire Family history Society of great interest as even the contents taken from the CWGC and the Soldiers Died in the great war are now easy to read and we in this world can realise the hardships that these Men and Women went through in the Great War to end all Wars . Thankfully the Lanarkshire Family History Society has researched and compiled this book and published it so that Historians and War Historians and Family members of the fallen can see who fell in that War.
I am one person in the world who has never researched a whole Town's War Dead and not even published any book so at least having this publication is a great help to anyone , family historian, historian or researcher . These people who spend hours and hours looking at newspapers and digging through CWGC and Soldiers Died indexes (& computerised ones in the recent years ) should be commended and in that way these Men and Women who fell in the Great War (and other wars ) will be Remembered .

Sticking up for myself, I realise, but I did do this for my Auchencairn book and am doing for one of my current projects, the Stewartry RoH (county of Kirkcudbrightshire, excluding Maxwelltown). Taking my Auchencairn book as an example, one advantage of including all (or as many as you can find) from an area who served is that not every story ends in death and despair.
My Auchencairn book contained the stories of 35 men who died in service and about another 120 stories/summaries of men and women who served and returned. Currently, my SRoH project has about 950 men and women who died in service and a further 4600 who served and returned. Based on the accepted casualty stats, I am probably still missing a few hundred more who returned. However, this shows one of the main reasons why not many people try and cover all who served - it can be very difficult to find them. Still, at least I will have made a good attempt.

Good point well made, Stuart. I'll revise my original point to ask why so few people research the men who came home?
Pat, I agree that it's useful this book has been published. However, I feel that it could have been a lot more thorough. |

I forgot to mention that on pages 74 to 86 there are lists of Men and Women from Strathaven who served in the Great War and these lists records their Regiments , corps etc including nurses
