Lethanhill - Cumnock & Doon District

The Lethanhill war memorial is a fine obelisk of grey polished granite, approximately 15 feet tall. The monument now stands high on the deserted hillside were the village once stood. The dedication reads:
ERECTED
BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION
AND
DEDICATED BY THE INHABITANTS
OF LETHANHILL AND BURNFOOTHILL
TO THE REVERED MEMORY
OF THEIR GLORIOUS DEAD WHO
IN MAKING THE SUPREME SACRIFICE
DURING THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918
NOBLY SUSTAINED FREEDOM'S CAUSE
The concrete foundations of the vanished buildings can be seen in the grass around the monument.

I thought I might post this, its a Scots Magazine article from September 1966. Its a bit off topic but couldn't resist it. I'll remove it if necessary.

From information received today, I believe that it should be possible to access this memorial by the old track although I don't know how far you can get by car. Turn on to the track at the North of Patna at OS Map Ref NS 417 110.

Lethanhill is just about accessible but you need boots etc to cross a few hundred metres of rough ground. Drive as far as you can up the track previously mentioned, when you get to the closed gate to the opencast mine - walk to your right along the perimeter fence and it will come into view. The good news is that the memorial is fenced off from the mine and in no immediate danger.

This is the current application under which the mine is operating:

The name IVIE has come up before but the only one I can remember is on the Rhonehouse School RoH - Ivie Carter. See:
http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=2087&highlight=ivie

I'm sure Paul (Spoons) has posted one as well.

It can be seen very clearly here how devastating it can be for a small community, that sees men enlist together into the same Regiment.
Out of the 16 men on the memorial 10 of the men are Royal Scots Fusiliers and 9 served and died with the 1/5th Battalion. The local TF Reg for the area.
2 sets of brothers being the Talman's and the Nugent's.
Not sure about the Lafferty's as both ages are 19 and 31
Thomas - Son of Mr. and Mrs. Lafferty, of 92, Burnfoothill, Dunaskin, Ayrshire. Age: 19
Ivie - Son of the late William and Agnes Greig Lafferty; husband of Susan Lafferty, of 6, Greenfield St., Govan, Glasgow. Age: 31
Devastated the community.
