Bankhead Primary School, 66 Caldwell Avenue, Knightswood, Glasgow G13 3AS

UKNIWM: Not Listed
OS Grid Ref: NS 522688

“On Thursday the 13th of March 1941 at around 9.00 pm sirens sounded over Clydeside warning of the approach of more than 400 German bombers. They had taken off from bases in Norway, Northern France, Northern Germany and The Netherlands.
At approximately 9.15 pm one of several bombers flying over Knightswood, a district on the west side of Glasgow, dropped a land or parachute mine. It scored a direct hit on a primary school, part of which was serving as an Auxiliary Fire Station, Air Raid Precautions (A.R.P.) post and Gas Decontamination Unit. 39 people were killed within the school or died later from their injuries. Almost all of them were Auxiliary Firemen, A.R.P. wardens and First Aid personnel. Many more were injured. The dead included a five year old boy. The school was Bankhead Primary situated between Caldwell Avenue and Broadlie Drive.”

The above passage has been reproduced from the book “Bankhead - The Story of a Primary School at War”, by Bryan Cromwell (ISBN 10: 0954136608).
I’m not sure if the book is still in publication, however your local library may have a copy.

John - what a great find.

For all the years I lived in Glasgow - I even worked this area - I'd never heard of this incident.
I've just found an eyewitness account from a friend of the Boy Messengers at

Fascinating.
