I had to take this photo through the window as the church was locked when I was there.
The brass plaque reads:
In memory of the men from Cockburnspath and District who gave their lives in the War 1939-1945.

Can't find an Alexander Herkess in CWGC or SNWM, but can find an Alexander Harkess (only one!) He was born in Innerleithan according to SNWM, but buried in Prestonpans. It could be a match!

Although this is listed as a church memorial the inscription suggests it could be considered a civic one. The following casualty listed is also listed on Crieff War Memorial, Perthshire but not on the public memorial for Cockburnspath;

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 04.10.1941
DEATH OF LOCAL AIRMAN
It is with sincere regret that we learn of the death of Sergeant-Observer Wilson Paxton as the result of injuries received in a crash. The intimation was received from a relative by telegram on Wednesday, and so far no details are available. Sergeant Paxton belonged to the Cockburnspath district, and came to Crieff five years ago to serve his apprenticeship in the local branch of the the Bank of Scotland. It is generally known that he had an excellent record in the bank; he was a member of the Institute of Bankers by examination, and his future looked a very promising one. He had a very high conception of loyalty and honour, which, with a naturally bright and happy disposition, endeared him to his many friends in Crieff. The sympathy of the community of Crieff goes out to his relatives in their irreparable loss. Wilson Paxton was a brave fellow, and made of the stuff of which the British nation is proud. |

Co'path is one of several Berwickshire villages who seem to have erected a parish church plaque after WW2 instead of adding to the WW1 memorial.
Gordon and Chirnside did similarly. |
