I haven't been able to find out much about Thomas Beattie. He seems to have had some sort of connection to Sir Robert Lorimer.
We do know he was the sculptor responsible for the soldier on Carnoustie's War Memorial.
It looks like the soldier has a moustache and perhaps it is this but he looks older than most of the servicemen statues found on war memorials.
Note the detail on the sleeve, overseas service chevrons. It's hard to make out but I don't know if it's a Black Watch badge on his Tam o'Shanter.
Regards

Adam,
Is there any chance that this Thomas Beattie was the father of William Beattie of the Hawick 1514 "Horse" fame?
Thomas was responsible for some of the work on the Usher Hall. _________________

I have found this website page with more detail on Thomas. It doesn't mention him working on Carnoustie / Barry but does mention him working on the Scottish National War Memorial.
http://sculpture.gla.ac.uk/view/person.php?id=msib6_1216117878
Thomas Beattie
Born 1863 (Circa)
Active: 1890 - 1940
Country of birth and death: Scotland
Plaster work instructor, architectural sculptor
Born in Hawick, Roxburghshire.
Works
Carved The Scottish National War Memorial
1927
Stone capitals of columns and shields of countries
However that same page lists William as his brother / sibling and also has him collaborating with Benjamin Edward Spence when he was four so I don't know accurate their information is!
The Spence connection perhaps suggests that this Thomas Beattie may have had a sculptor relation in the generation before him. Father or Uncle perhaps? |

Adam,
Thanks for that.
An interesting website, but as you mention, it's perhaps a little inaccurate. _________________
