I have found James Holley, with the help of some Church members, who is listed on the Maxwell Church memorial.
However, he is not listed on CWGM or SNWM sites.
The details I have are;
James Holley(Name is spelt Holly on Memorial)
Discharged due to gas poisoning
Died 5th December 1919
Son of Mr. Thomas and Mrs Elizabeth Holley, Gartsherrie, Coatbridge.
Served with the Gordon Highlanders
Prior to enlistment he was employed with Gartsherrie Ironworks
His name is listed on the following Memorials:Gartsherrie (Bairds Scottish Steel) Bowling Club.
There is an inscription on the family Gravestone in Old Monkland CemeterySection 46, Lair number 4
I have also discovered that his death may have been caused by the gas poisoning.
Does he merit consideration for inclusion in the CWGC site?
Interested to hear opinions and possible forwarding of his details .

Thanks Anne.
James Holly was born 24 July 1893 in Coatbridge and died there on 3 December 1919. Cause of death was Phthisis Pulmonalis which, I have read, can be the result of gas poisoning.
BC spells Holly and DC Holley.
I have copies of both Certificates. |

Hi Morag
Can you send me a copy of the DC? I can check regards his being a possible CWGC non-comm, but it seems unlikely. _________________ Jim

Unfortunatly there is nothing to be done in this case.
His Service file does not survive. It would have been required to establish a link between the cause of the " alleged " discharge and death. I was hoping his DC may have given his MGC number and linked his cause of death to military service. It provides neither.
I am not inclined to think he was medically discharged as this is usually recorded on the Medal Card which does survive.
Often NOK and others locally drew a connection to subsequent death and army service which did not, in fact, exist despite him having served some years in the Army.
It is quite possible he was demobilised early in 1919, contracted TB ( which was a common health issue then ) and died at the end of the year. Certainly had he been gassed his lungs may have been affected but I would have expected the doctor to have made comment of it. _________________ Jim

Thank you, Anne, for the 1901 Census. I have found the family on 1911 Census and the family gravestone in Old Monkland shows many of them buried there.
I think this is now a closed search thanks to Jim's information. Not quite the result I had hoped for but thats just what happens sometimes.
Many thanks

Jim, thank you for that information. Not the result I had hoped for but at least he has a mention on the family gravestone. He will also be added to my War Memorial Books.
Grateful thanks for all your help now and in the past.
