I am writing to record the existence of an individual memorial to Alex Dunbar in the old churchyard in Cardross. My father, Wm Hall entered into pilot training with Alex Dunbar and witnessed his death during a training session. Dad is now 90 and is still haunted by the memory of Alex's death, despite all the other tragedies that he witnessed as a bomber pilot in both Europe and the Far East throughout the 2nd World War.

The memorial is a lovely white stone memorial, standing beside the family grave, and I want to make sure that Alex's story is passed on before the memories of my Dad are lost. I have an extract from Dad's memoirs describing his friendship with Alex and the circumstances of his death if anyone is interested in reading these.

Kind regards
Maureen

Maureen

From what you describe I suspect the white memorial is in fact the CWGC headstone for Sergeant Dunbar's grave. You often find a CWGC next to a family headstone which also listed the same person.

Here is his entry in the CWGC database.

DUNBAR, ALEXANDER GLASS
Initials: A G
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Sergeant (Pilot)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Age: 23
Date of Death: 23/09/1940
Service No: 968153
Additional information: Son of Francis G. Dunbar and Mary Dunbar, of Helensburgh.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sec. C. Grave 20.
Cemetery: CARDROSS CHURCHYARD

Strictly speaking this would be an entry for the Scottish War Graves Project but in this case I personally would like to know more about your father's memoirs and would like to see you post them here.

Thanks

Adam

Adam - many thanks for your reply and clarifcation of the different kinds of stones - I had not appreciated the difference, but am pleased to know the grave is listed in the project.

I'm afraid I am not quite sure how I can attach the 3 pages of memoirs onto this page, but I would be delighted to share them. They are jpg docs, or I would be happy to send a copy to you by ordinary mail if that was easier?

Maureen
