Ken recently posted some information about a Larbert man who died when his ship was sunk by a U-Boat on a North Atlantic convoy
Kenneth Morrison wrote: | http://uboat.net/allies/merchants/ships/2004.html
Route Grangemouth - Loch Ewe (24 Jul) - Halifax in Ballast
Built as Vanduara 1937 renamed Arletta
At 16.13 hours on 5 Aug 1942 the Arletta (Master George William Stockton Rogers), a straggler from convoy ON-115, was torpedoed and sunk by U-458 south-southwest of Cape Race. |
I decided to look up ON-115 and what I found showed me that online information about convoys varies and to get the facts it obviously needs the sort of digging a veteran sleuth like Ken takes in his stride!
Putting ON-115 into Google throws up a few links
Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convoy_ON_115
U-Boat Net
http://uboat.net/ops/convoys/convoys.php?convoy=ON-115
Arnold Hague Convoy database
http://www.convoyweb.org.uk/on/index.html?onz.php?convoy=115!~onzmain
The last link shows the Arletta as being built in 1925 and shows the Convoy as Departed Liverpool on 24 July 1942. Arrived Boston on 8 August 1942.
The Wikipedia page seems to have been based on the Arnold Hague database.
A further look on the internet gives the war sailors ON Convoy page
http://www.warsailors.com/convoys/onconvoys2.html
This site also gives a 1925 build date for the Arletta but has the convoy departure location as Loch Ewe, not LIverpool. It also cites Arnold Hague as a source for the data.
Convoy number ON 115 LOCH EWE 24/07/42
ARLETTA 084 Br 4,870 25 STRAGGLED AND SUNK BY U 458 5.8.42
There are differences between the Arnold Hague and Warsailors lists for ON-115 55 ships and 42 ships but the differences are down to the Hague list including the RN escort ships.
So, where do you go for accurate information on convoys which you can trust?

Adam - I tend to rely on uboat.net as I have found it to be the most accurate. Using their data, another ship lost, the "Lochkatrine", had sailed from Liverpool (on the 23rd) bound for New York.
I think the process was to gather ships from the various ports at Loch Ewe before making for the American East Coast under escort.
Halifax NS was used most often as the gathering place for return convoys.
My other main reliable source is wrecksite.eu and the info they have in this case is
Arletta SS was a British Steam Tanker of 4,870 tons built in 1925 by Robert Duncan & Co, Port Glasgow as the VANDUARA for Gow Harrison & Co, Glasgow. In 1937 she was purchased by Arlon SS Co. (Sir James German & Co Ltd), Cardiff and renamed ARLETTA. On the 5th August 1942 when on route from GRANGEMOUTH and LOCH EWE for HALIFAX in ballast and in Convoy ON-115 as a straggler she was torpedoed by German submarine U-458 and sunk SW of Cape Race.

Thanks Ken
I'll stick to Uboat.net and wrecksite.eu then.
Kind regards
