However the church is no longer used and is up for sale. To safeguard the future of the cross, it was brought along to the grounds of the Parish Church where you saw it. The boys from the Ayrshire Imperial Yeomanry fought as dismounted cavalry and at some time were subsumed into the RSF. There were two men from the village ended up in the DCLI - one was killed in Macedonia and the other at Jerusalem. They were probably transferred into the regiment to make up numbers. Back to top Richard Bain Joined: 02 Feb 2007 Posts: 73 Location: Cumnock, Ayrshire Posted: Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:26 pm    Post subject: Not on the VillageWar Memorial Hi Derek, As far as I am aware, there are approx 27 from the First World War and 3 from the Second who are not named on the village war memorial or any of the others in the village. The SDGW has Pte Graham born in New Cumnock, enlisting in Alloa and resident in Plean. So maybe he moved to the Stirlingshire coal field as a child with his parents or moved later as an adult. I haven't got round to checking whether any of these men are listed on other memorials - you've just given me the necessary kick up the whatsit to get me started! Anyway, I have given up trying to work out why some men are mentioned and some aren't. eg Pte Andrew Armstrong was the son of the minister of Bank Free Church and he died during 3rd Ypres on the 21st Oct 1917. He's not on the village memorial or even the Bank School memorial. Whereas 2nd Lieut. John Jarvie, kia on the 17/4/1917 and a teacher at bank School is on the Bank School memorial but not on the village one. He did however leave Bank and move to Canonbie school on which village memorial he is mentioned. Anyway it sounds as if I'm rambling and it's supper o' clock. So it looks as if his family moved across there pre 1914. Pte Graham was not on New Cumnock's memorial but he was on Plean's and many will be commemorated like him, not in his place of birth but in his place of residence pre-1914. This is where the SDGW records will come in handy if they give a place of residence on enlistment. In my research in Sutherland quite often those born in one parish are listed on another parish's memorial because the family moved after they were born. The inscriptions on a memorial are based on a list complied in the early 1920s, not a birth register from the 1890s. The one's that are most at risk of not being commemorated are people born and brought up in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee who did not attend Church. Even then the big cities compiled rolls of honour so even if they weren't on a brass plaque somewhere they were in a roll of honour. Sadly it looks like Edinburgh and Leith's rolls of honour went in the bucket in the 1980s so they may not be commemorated now but they were for many years. I don't know about Dundee but the Glasgow RoH is still available. There are going to be poor souls not commemorated but I don’t think you are looking at thousands. In fact I think you’ll find that thousands are commemorated on more than one memorial. Hopefully that is something that this forum can prove over time. If all else fails though even if they are not commemorated at a civic level they will hopefully be remembered at a national level with the Scottish National War Memorial. I know it’s not perfect and there are a lot missing from that as well but with nearly 150,000 names on their rolls of honour that’s a pretty big commemorative net. Four of them fell with the 9th Black Watch.
