I will abbreviate the many paragraphs of write up but Doug Reid of the Royal British Legion Scotland who served with the Royal Navy has devoted countless hours over the past six years to create albums commemorating the SOLDIERS , SAILORS , AIRMEN AND SERVICEWOMEN of the town .

The project was intended to record the exploits of servicemen and women from 1980 to the present , but Mr Reid decided to start from 1914 and work up from there.

As well as ARBROATH the archive covers FRIOCKHEIM and INVERKEILOR and there are a number of entries for CARNOUSTIE - including the Burgh's Two Victoria Cross winners , school mates George Samson and Charles Jarvis .

To see the archive visit the Royal British Legion Scotland Arbroath Branch in Helen Street. Legion membership is not required .

Although now virtually complete Mr Reid realises that the archive will always be a work in progress.

The newspaper report which I saw is quite large also has a photograph of Doug Reid with some of his archive tributes ( in book form ).

I've used this as a resource a number of times now and it is excellent.

It has many more casualties listed than the towns war memorial, probably in part to it being derived from newspaper reports and including surrounding areas.

There are 793 casualties listed for WW1, there are only 391 great war names listed on Arbroath War Memorial.
Even if you include the 18 Arbirlot and 61 St Vigeans names from their own WW1 memorials (as they became part of the town before the second world war) you get 470.

That leaves over 300 extra names!
