The Arbroath High School War Memorial was unveiled at the end of the Great War in the school then located in Keptie in the town and it was discovered that names had been missed off the original war memorial . Because of that the School's War Memorial Committee decided to have a roll of honour for the School's former pupils and list also the Six former pupils whose names had been missed . ( Five of the former pupils had been missed off the original War Memorial had been killed in action during the War years and one former pupil had died of wounds as a result of action in the Great War on 2nd November 1921 ).

During my school years in Arbroath the WW1 , WW1 roll of Honour and the WW2 war memorials for the school were located in the main entrance to the Arbroath High School outside the Rector's office and next to the hall of the school .

During the mid 1980s the Arbroath High School was closed in Keptie in the town and a new purpose built Arbroath High School built at a new location at Keptie Road in the town and it would seem that the Large War Memorial for the Great War with the names of the former pupils listed and the WW2 war memorial (no names of casualties ) were moved by the Council Education Dept to the new school location and the Roll of Honour for the Great War failed to get to the new High School in the town.

In the very recent years I had a "press release " in the newspapers and contacted the Director of Education in Forfar and with various "searches " it would appear that this Roll of Honour was thrown out or lost in the move

The Arbroath Guide for Saturday , 30 June 1923 records the following :

HIGH SCHOOL WAR MEMORIAL : On the occasion of the presentation of Prizes at the High School yesterday , when all the pupils were assembled in the hall, the Rector, Mr D Drysdale , said that when the school war memorial was first completed , two and half years ago , it was discovered that the names of five of the former pupils who had laid down their lives in the Great War had been received too late for inclusion in the list , which was to be inserted on the memorial . After that date, another of the former pupils of the school died , as a result of wounds received in action. The committee who had had the erection of the memorial in hand, had already decided that there should be added to it an oak case to contain the roll of honour and they agreed that the names of the SIX Men should be inscribed thereon. That had been done, and the memorial was ready to be unveiled . With the assembly standing Mrs D Littlejohn performed the unveiling Ceremony . The names inscribed on the Additional Section of the Memorial are -

P.W. ANDERSON, D. BAXTER , D. CAIRD , C. ESPLIN, G.R. MILL and J. WILSON.

The section takes the form of a Tasteful little glass fronted oak case, in which the roll of honour will be kept . It was made by W. Middleton & Sons , cabinet makers , Millgate .

Any chance that it might be with Angus Council Archives/Museum or is that a route you have already explored?

Yes , have been around that circle myself with Angus Council education officer , the county archivist etc and incase anything was overlooked I then later had a follow up enquiry by an Arbroath councillor who said that it could have been destroyed on the orders of old Tayside authority before the counties got back their authority and as usual no one knows anything ! I had a press release to the Angus edition of the Courier and not one ex arbroath high school teacher or old janior came forward saying they saw it before the old 100 year old school closed and the new high school was opened with all new furniture . Maybe the council thought that the Roll of honour was away in past but as you can guess Ive not forgotten and had it raised in the last weeks at the "new " 1985 Arbroath High School PTA meeting ...............

thanks
