A possible non-com:
GUNNER JOHN SPROAT McGILL, RGA is listed on the various Crossmichael Memorials but no sign on CWGC/SNWM.
The church memorial and the Stewartry RoH give a date of death of 27 February 1919 - the latter states "from illness contracted on service"
I found a MIC on Nat Archives for John S McGill, Gunner RGA (76888) and Labour Corps (452092)
and a death, John S McGill aged 29, at Preston on FreeBMD (nothing on GRoS)
Before I send for D/Cert. could someone check for Service Records, etc. please? _________________ Ken

As Mark points out some of his file exists.
This man was residing at Preston on enlisting. John Sproat McGill, born Castle Douglas was discharged on 15th April 1918, no longer fit for service. The Medical Board shows the disability was a detached retina ( right eye) due to accidental injury on Active Service in France ( Somme) in October 1916.
The file shows he died on 27th February 1919.
His death would need to have a direct link to his eye injury to qualify for war death status. I think that is very unlikely to be the case and so he will not be a non comm.
If you do get his DC I would be interested in the cause given. _________________ Jim

John died at 135 Church St. Preston 27/2/1919 Age 29.
He is described as a "Discharged Soldier (Commercial Traveller)
Cause of Death is given as "Sarcoma of Liver"
So no connexion with the reason for discharge and, as we suspected, not a Non-Com.
Thanks again for your help on this one. _________________ Ken |
